| 10 Years – Shelter Lyrics | 12 years ago |

This is truly an incredible song by 10 Years. I really relate to it on so many levels. I know 10 Years songs are usually deep and can have more to them than just what seems to be there on the surface, but my interpretation of this song is just taking the lyrics literal. I think the first verse is a person (maybe even Jesse himself) talking to Jesus. "Please savior of here, (this world) give me shelter from fear." It reads like someone praying for divine protection against their own fears. Wanting the strength to overcome their weaknesses. "I need answers to this, crazy world that's so mixed." Again, speaking to God/Jesus. Having your own doubts and concerns. As well most people wanting answers to questions that aren't easily answered. Like "why are we here?" "what is our purpose?" "why does evil exist?" And things of that nature that aren't easily explained. "With this pain that leaves us, lifeless and so dead-souled." Confessing that seeing the horrors of this world, like rape, murder, molestation, war, etc. are shocking, but eventually you hear the headlines so often, that you becomes used to it and almost numb. Because these terrible things unfortunately happen so frequently. "We all need to, break this mold." Acquiescing that we all need to fight and change the way the world is. "I'm so sure, you'll blame me for this all." Some believe that if you are not born again, that you carry the stain of original sin upon you. So if you are not "saved," then one can be considered part of the world. The secular world. And therefore are a part of the evils of that same world. So it's the person admitting that he is sure that God will blame him for everything that happens in this world. Because he/she is a sinner. "What's so wrong, you claim to call this love." It is said that God loves us and that He will accept us into Heaven if we believe in him, and worship him. But if not, He will send us to a lake of fire to burn and be tortured for eternity. But He loves us. So to me, this line is saying that God leaves us to live "freely" in this world, and suffer at the hands of wicked people, but in his mind it is out of love. "Drips hit the floor, who cares at all" To me, this can be taken either two ways. It could symbolize someone crying. But given the next line, I think it's more likely that it speaks a person who cuts themselves. And the blood hits the floor. And they feel like no cares about them at all. "Flesh sheared and torn, sleeves hide remorse." Symbolizes both the condition of their arms from cutting, as well as the shame they feel for doing so. So they hide their arms with their sleeves, so no one will know what they are doing to themselves. "Stardom branded skin, traps pain within," To me, this speaks of maybe tattoos on their arms. The outer layer of their skin that hides the pain they feel inside. Causing them to harm themselves. "Expectations, never reaching." And to me, this line speaking of a person admitting that they will never live up to God's expectations. Or be able to follow his 10 Commandments. Because they aren't perfect. They are sinners. But again, this is just my interpretation. I hope I didn't offend anyone's faith or anything. But seeing as how I am an atheist, this is how the song speaks to me, and what I get from it. I'd love to hear your opinions on it. Take care everyone. |
