"We may never be angels But we're lousy with the spirit." "Spirit" in every sense of the word. Righteous! |

I think it's about co-dependent relationship and one person's decision to break free of it. . 1st verse - Think about any of those 1960s - 70s motels which has fallen from grace and rents on a monthly basis. It's cheap and tawdry, but it offers a sort of sanctuary for someone fleeing a bad relationship. 2nd verse - The narrator knows that both people in the relationship tend to blow little things way out of proportion, but considers that level of drama better than feeling cut off & alone. Meanwhile, the narrator senses the other person's opposing point of view, i.e. it's not worth all the drama. 3rd verse - The narrator acknowledges that the current situation is just bringing both of them down at every opportunity, and is very sorry for it. "It rained, over the remains of a shooting star landed directly on our broke-down little car." Rain has a negative connotation, but that is nothing compared to "the remains of a shooting star", i.e. the relationshiip between the narrator and the other person which began with such promise but which now amounts to nothing more than a "broke-down little car" which conveys a sense of going nowhere. "Before that we had made a wish that we would be missed if one or the other just did not exist." This refers to their sense of purpose and significance, the meaning of their existence. They validated one another's existence, but that arrangement is about to end. "That's what we're waiting for, aren't we?" They are now both waiting for the narrator to implode, to cease to exist, so that the person who escaped & survived can start missing him / her. The video bears this out. Look at the videos of happier times and consider who is holding the camera. Also, in the scene at the gas station, consider it to be a self-serve station and wonder what happened to the guy pumping gas into the get-away car. The song & video destroy. . |
