@[awd650:46981] Good observation. I've always been curious whether Armenia is pronounced with an accent on the 1st and 3rd syllable anywhere in the world. My friends of Armenian ancestry put the accent on the 2nd syllable. |

I hear this song being about an older couple, who despite love and loyalty, don't find sex and romance with each other exciting any more, so they separately write into a virtual reality where they can surprise one another by creating locations, objects, other characters, appear as other characters of either gender and maybe not even know whether the person they're interacting with is their partner or some invention of the other. I love the triple entendre, "This is where I get off"
1: reference to arriving at a location, 2: I refuse to go any further with this,
3: This is what gets me off
Becker & Fagen really invoke that noir feel and desperate passion here that they do so well. |

Please don't feel bruised if this song adds meaning to your life, but I think the lyrics are just placeholders that don't mean anything connected or coherent, rather to just sound portentous and deep. There was a lot of that around at the time. Great example of psychodelia, and fun to listen to ironically or straight up! Also, the song was stolen from its authors and carried to another band/studio by a sleazy manager, agent or producer, and that makes it a great example of the cynicism of the music business in the 60's. |

I was certain this was about angel demons charged with chasing Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld through 7 circles of hell hacking them to bits for all eternity, but now that I read Don's explanation, I guess that's it, although it will always have that special meaning for me. Remember their description of "Kings" on the Can't Buy A Thrill album cover? Something like, "No political significance?" But we all visualized Nixon anyway. Don, in case you read this stuff, I'm glad your mom's at peace now, and peace and thanks to you, too. |
