| Does it not make more sense that the kiss that he refers to, is actually the kiss where she cheats on him. He is saying "i've been doing just fine, gotta gotta be down" but it (it = the jealously) started out with a kiss and then the rest of the song logically follows on. All paranoia etc comes from that kiss she had with another guy, and how it seems odd that she only a kissed him yet id had such a profound effect on him coz he was so in love... | |

I think the general meaning of the song is easy to understand. The protagonist is overly jealous. However I think there are some subtleties that people are mistakenly presuming to go one way rather than the other. For example the video is just an artistic portrayal of a promiscuous girlfriend, not an actual prostitute. Also “it was only a kiss it was only a kiss: Is talking about his girlfriend’s kiss with another guy. Not that his kiss with her has got him hooked. Instead the kiss he is referring to is one where she cheated on him. So when he thinks about it, and even though it was only a kiss, he can’t help but dwell on it. Therefore after that incident he can’t help but dream up worse scenarios in his head of what she is doing, and he feels his trust in her is completely gone. And these negative thoughts are taking control, and are killing him. So he forever has to be Mr Brightside. He can’t help but perceive her as promiscuous. Not an actual prostitute but just someone who is disloyal. He then end’s with I never… I.e I would never do that to her and therefore he walks away from her (at the end of the video he leaves her) . So I think the video is more an artistic metaphorical dramatization of what is going on in his head when he thinks about how his girlfriend cheated on him, and that she is promiscuous. I think miss atomic bomb backs this up… “your soul was innocent, SHE KISSED HIM, and she painted it black.” Also: “It feels just like a dagger buried deep in your back, You run for cover but you can't escape the second attack” is saying how the betrayal has got you scared that it will happen again, but your thoughts won’t let you escape the thought she might do it again i.e ‘a second attack…’ on your trust, by another act of cheating. |
