| @[exobscura:50216] I never heard that before but I think this song is about a real woman or perhaps a trans woman now that you mentioned that. I also think it might be about a woman who’s not home messed up in the head yet and not a game player. Something like that would be gold. She ain’t no witch also indicates that she’s not corrupted and a game player. And the line, and I love the way she twitch, seems to indicate that things with her not transactional like with so many women today. | |

@[abbey11472:49993] this is about interpretation. To me it is like he has resigned himself to the fact that there’s nothing he can do about what has been predestined by the all knowing God. If it was God‘s will to damage his vocal cords that would be something he would not have known. Since everything is already predetermined by the all-knowing God, assuming that’s the God Leonard believed them it makes perfect sense. The god of Abraham knowingly inflicted all sorts of biting maladies of the body and mind onto his children. At the same time he gave his angels pain-free lives unearned. In the end, if we are lucky enough to dot all the I’s and cross all the T’s, our reward becomes eternity in heaven where we sit around massaging God’s insatiable ego. God put us all into this biological trap so that we would live in constant fear of death. What kind of a sadist would do that? God, that’s the kind of sadist that would do that. I think that Leonard touched on predetermination as part of God‘s plan. In his song hallelujah we hear the line “ a baffled king composing hallelujah”. The last line in that song is, “I stand before the Lord of song with nothing on my tongue but hallelujah”. Which tells me that God does not want the truth and that he wants constant adoration kind of like every other tyrant. Overall I think it would be your will exposes the evil depravity and the tyranny of God. Leonard was a seeker when it came to religion and spirituality and I suppose he was hoping to find some sort of answer perhaps he was afraid of what he knew deep down inside. For me, unless I learn something else or some benevolent deity shows up I am left with two possible realities. There is no God or creator or if there is that creator is evil. if there is a father in heaven he is a sadist and he should be turned over to child protective services and thrown in a cage for eternity |

@[Balldozer:49992], we don’t know if Leonard Cohen believed in God. He was writing to an audience. a lot of his songs were not autobiographical. If there is a god and charging by the world the suffering, the unfairness, the disease And injustice, God cannot possibly be good. If we read the religious texts, we see that God is portrayed as a bully, a tyrant malignant narcissist. so was that said, it sounds like Leonard Cohen Has excepted the fact that God is not going to help him matter how much he prays or praises the evil tyrant. If God is all knowing then long before we are born God already knows what is in store for us. We are an idea of God then so is every disease that he allows humans to suffer from. His song hallelujah his contemptuous of God and that’s why I like the song and for other reasons. God is the author of confusion and chaos. |

I don't think most Bolan's songs have literal meanings but they convey a feeling and usually that feeling is joyfully erotic. If you want to assign meaning here is my take I move like a cat, talk like a rat, sting like a bee Babe I'm gonna be your man And it's plain to see you were meant for me, yeah I'm your toy Your twentieth century boy Bolan had flocks of teeny boppers flicking their switches over him. In fact that would get so carried away that at the concerts a lot of them would piss their pants. Maybe he is talking about getting it on with a more mature woman who were more discreetly flicking their switches over Bolan. |

I think it was totally a spoof and as I recall it was inspired by some college professor who taught a course about Lennon's songs. In Glass Onion Lennon says" Here's another clue for you all, the Walrus was Paul." I think that Glass Onion was another way of Lennon breaking balls. I don't know if he was influenced by Marc Bolan who wrote mostly nonsense songs. |

| I think this is about a pimp and his whore and the whore's cuckolded mate. | |

It's IMO about despair. I think the line "did you ever go clear" refers to scientology and I think Cohen was into that for a while. Going clear refers to some sort Scientology mumbo jumbo about baring your soul. It sounds like they are left in a relationship that is broken more than it was broken and passionless before Jane's betrayal. It's interesting that in his poetry book the last line is "sincerely your crime" but the song he says, "sincerely L Cohen" You came home without Lilly Marlene to me means that the antagonist also never found a faithful mate. |

What is meant by "I stand before the lord of song with nothing on my tongue but hallelujah."? For me the song is about life beating you up, being confused, making mistakes, not understanding the ever changing rules but still trying to do the right thing. |

The 2nd stanza sums it up for me. If it be your will If there is a choice Let the rivers fill Let the hills rejoice Let your mercy spill On all these burning hearts in hell If it be your will To make us well God is an evil tyrant who is incapable of mercy and his unquenchable ego is the reason he sends people to hell. Cohen is showing how people kiss God butt in hopes of escaping his cruel wrath. It is God's will that we suffer. That is how he gets his jollies. That is why he made us. Would you order one of your kids to be tortured endlessly because he was disobedient? God does it all the time. If Cohen told the truth about this song all of God's butt kissers would boo him off the stage. Wake up folks... GOD IS EVIL! |
