They found a niche at just the right time in history, when a bunch of self-loathing liberals were reflecting on historical injustices and wondering what they could do. Well, buy a Rage album and virtue signal while they guilt you for a distorted view of history you weren’t even alive to participate in. Easy money. |

As usual with this band, the lyrics are atrocious poetry. The song and Ed’s performance is beautiful though. It’s just frustrating because all their lyrics are so incredibly cryptic and/or stupid. Oh well, I guess make up your own meaning. That’s the beauty of art, it’s entirely subjective. |

I think this song is just like most Live songs in that the lyrics as presented are virtually meaningless. You put your own meaning into them however the song hits you. I think there are traces of disembodied thoughts in almost every line of any given song by these guys but they rarely connect in any conventional or straightforward way. On one hand, it’s infuriating because you want to know what they meant. I mean, a lot of their songs SOUND really profound. On the other hand, it’s kind of liberating to make your own meaning out of their gibberish. Hey, it’s not like you could ever be proven definitively wrong since the lyrics are always unnecessarily cryptic. |

@[cansong:44387] Yeah you fuckin nailed it, man. I’ve been in the same boat too, it’s crazy how it changes you. I only got through it with therapy and a lot of support from friends and family. But it still ended up being such a traumatic event that I mark the years of my adult life as being either BT or AT (T being her first initial). This song is a reminder that heartbreak can lead you down some very dark roads.

A lot of people have mentioned the obvious cheating ex-girlfriend but the darker side of this song is the stalker-y guy. It’s possible he overestimated how serious the relationship was and is now super bitter that she’s moved on. Spying on her from a car parked outside her house doesn’t exactly bode well for her, whether she’s a cheating skank or not.
To be fair to the guy’s perspective, I think this feeling of deep bitterness is very common and many of us have been there. But one eventually has to break interrupt that toxic cycle or it will consume one’s life, just like the guy in the song. |

Another Live song with no real meaning except for whatever one decides to take out of it. Sometimes there just isn't any true mystery, folks. There's just some music and some words that open themselves up for a world of interpretation, and that's beautiful and virtuous in its own right. |

I feel like this song is a statement about how American culture is hollow and soulless, boiled down to nothing more than catchphrases and slogans, glossy, shiny products, and a complete lack of understanding of and appreciation for actual traditions and roots. Many Americans blindly follow and never question, and constantly spout the same tired propaganda about how great they think they are. As an American, I'm proud of my country and its heritage, but I know its many flaws as well, and I don't think they should be minimized. At some point, America will have to take a long, hard look in the mirror, see past all the veneers and facades, and try to understand what we're really all about. One thing I know, it's not the things you're constantly bombarded with every day. Look deeper. This song pokes fun at how shallow we can be, but we haven't completely sold our soul just yet. |

The beauty of AIC is that the songs are imbued with such soul and emotion that everyone can take away something completely personal and yet completely unique in perspective. To me, this song is about a failed relationship. I really connected with it a few years ago when I had the person who I thought was my soulmate just walk away. The lyrics have a very pointed and frank way of placing the blame for the fallout squarely on one person's shoulders and portraying the consequences as being a simple result of that person's decisions. It's as if it's saying, "this relationship failed because you weren't strong enough for it." Interestingly, it's not so much bitterness that comes though as much as pity for a person who clearly has deeply seeded emotional issues and can't seem to cope with them. And yet, it emphatically states that because of the person's failure to deal with those things and live up to their end of the bargain, others have been hurt, and now the betrayer will have to live with that on their conscience as well. Ultimately, you reap what you sow. Strong song. |

This song is speaking to me pretty strongly right now, amazing how AIC tends to do that when I'm going through emotional turmoil. It feels like it perfectly describes my feelings for a girl I'm crazy about. The song has a kind of cynical optimism to it. He laments that things go away and that he's not ultimately happy for the long term, and hopes the odds someday work out in his favor. He's also not sure about anything, whether he's ready to commit and lose his individuality. When he's with this girl, the same uncertainty persists. When he tells her how he feels, sometimes she pulls away because she's not sure she's ready to trust and commit either, Other times, they give in to each other, desperately searching for something strong to latch onto. This is where the sexy guitar riffs take over for me. The would-be couple shares a strong intimate connection, and yet they're both unsure of exposing themselves emotionally and becoming vulnerable to each other. Toward the end, he acknowledges some tender thoughts of her, that she's one of the few sweet things in his life and that he wants her, but isn't sure of himself. Nothing is resolved by this song, but it certainly touches on a lot of emotional issues, at least for me. Being unsure of myself, wondering if I've been scarred by past relationships to the extent I may be "too far gone from love" to ever give of myself to someone fully again. Hoping that eventually, "something's gotta turn out right." |
