Lorde – Bravado Lyrics 12 years ago
I think she is writing about the four years she spent being groomed by the record label from when she was 12 until now. She was signed for her unique voice at 12, but when she wasn't connecting personally with songs they wanted her to sing, they suggested she write.

"All my life
I’ve been fighting a war
I can’t talk to you or your friends
It’s not only you
My heart jumps around when I’m eluded to
This will not do"

In this verse, she's talking about how she is fighting for what she wants regarding music, her passion, but that now her friends look at her differently. She said in an interview that her friends had no idea she was recording an EP and album on the weekends sometimes. They had no idea she had been signed since 12. She explained that in her country, they don't really have a concept of fame because it's so small. It has to be difficult to come out and admit you are being internationally recognized for your music to your friends, and she explains why in the next verse.

"'Cause I was raised up to be admired,
To be noticed
But when you’re withdrawn
It’s the closest thing
To a someone who lies around you
This will not do"

She was raised to be noticed and admired for her talents, but she isn't naturally a performer or outgoing.

The rest of the song, it's clear that she is making the decision to grab her dream by the horns. She wants the "the applause the approval the things that make [her] go oh." And "when the lights turn on" she is ready.

"It’s a switch flipped
It’s a pill tipped back
It’s a moon eclipsed"

She is talking about what happens when she steps on stage. She explained to her friends that Lorde is a different person from Ella. Lorde is her stage name, a character she believes in when she is performing. She flips the switch, or takes a pill, and Ella is eclipsed by Lorde.

Lorde – Royals Lyrics 12 years ago
She has stated herself that she wanted to make a statement that we are all listening to songs about a lifestyle majority of us do not know of and have no connection or experience. She has also said she has a slight obsession with royalty and what it can be seen as in pop culture now that true royalty is basically extinct.

Lorde – The Love Club Lyrics 12 years ago
This song is not about her newfound celebrity status, because she wrote and released the EP about a year ago. Royals is on the same EP. She was internationally recognized about 9 months later, and didn't reveal who she even was until April/May.

She is very candid. All of her songs are about things in her life, which is extremely normal. She has stated this song is about the popular crowd in school. That's what she's referring to about getting "severed from those who watch you grow up."

There aren't a lot of hidden meanings in her songs, and she's pretty frank about that. She is a "what you see is what you get" kind of girl who wants to write about things that are real, and things that she connects to as a 16 year-old. For her, that's school, her social life, things she's reading, other artists and songs she listens to.

Paramore – Misery Business Lyrics 12 years ago
The better song about the woman, Sherri Dupree, Hayley's man cheated on, and then divorced is called Ambulance, and was written and sung by her sister from Sherri's point of view, as a means of sharing her grief with her sister. Stacy DuPree King has the power to bring tears to your eyes if you know what the song is about, and even if you don't, the song is pure emotional hurt, anguish, and betrayal.

I find it fitting that Hayley sings this lyric "Once a whore you're nothing more," because she became a true homewrecker. I wonder if, looking back, she would stand up to that lyric with her actions and call it true.

The music industry is a small one, and people make mistakes. Although Hayley and Chad should have handled things differently, Sherri met, married, and has a beautiful daughter with Max Bemis, singer of Say Anything. The devastation of Sherri's divorce lead to some of the best songs they have ever written, and happiness, marriage, and motherhood for all three sisters of Eisley has lead to one of their greatest albums.

The same can be said for Hayley and Paramore. Her song for Chad and the album containing the song "Only Exception" are great works, and I would say the greatest, before Paramore lost two founding members and changed their sound.

It's funny, looking back at the past, and seeing how the music of each band so thoroughly mirrors the lives of not only the members of each band, but other people from bands we know and love, and how connected everything is.
