I totally agree! Many Grandaddy songs (but particularly on "The Sophtware Slump") have this theme of questioning whether our modern, technology-driven lifestyle is really the best way forward... And I say that as a 100% Technophile myself! :-D |

As I've said in another comment here, one of the things I like about Grandaddy is the way that often, not just the lyrics but the instrumentation (the instrument 'voices') suggest this world of grungy, "broken" or "failed" technology (most obviously in "Broken Household Appliance National Forest") |

I tend to agree with your view; an old colleague of mine from where I work says he wants this track played at his funeral :-) |

Re Bocmaxima's comment, I think the first satellite image utils for the PC were beginning to come out around this time and I often think of this song when using the likes of Google Earth :-)
I totally get Stephen57's idea about the Dial-A-View user being someone using the technology to look up a former lover from a failed relationship; that idea has a particular resonance with me as I listened to this track a lot whilst going through a bit of a rough patch with the woman who is now my partner :-)
One of the elements I like about a lot of Grandaddy's songs is, both in the lyrics and choice of instrumentation used for the music, they often portray a world of grungy, "failed" or "broken" technology |
