This song is generally about a relationship that's starting to go south because the speaker believes that his love interest has become indifferent to the relationship. The verses ("like a crash I wait for the impact") places him in a passive position that shows how he is both loyal (''like a dog...'') but and the ''innocent one'' in the relationship. The entire metaphor of the gun is fantastic though. If you've ever been the person who's doubtful and anxious about a relationship, whether romantic or just a friendship, you start to constantly question the emotions of your partner. The speaker feels that he's done so much for the relationship (''blown holes in my soul'') but while he's starting to put blame on his partner, he ironically is the one that starts to damage the relationship (''rain's falling through'') So he starts planting ''mice'' to test his partner, because he believes that, even if he is the one who put them there, if she cares enough she would try to shoot them. No matter what her perspective is, he hates that she hasn't tried to fix their problems, which those problems build and eventually lead to the end of their relationship. I think the song might have been more about how indifferent the partner was, but it ended up being a fantastic testament about how someone's inner demons (paranoia, doubt, etc), can ultimately damage relationships. |
