This song has some overtones of dealing with some kind of mental disorder. Maybe depression, but I think there is a little bit more to it. Not only is it about dealing with this kind of mental setback, but it deals with the ways in which one's personal connections and relationships are affected when someone is dealing with mental issues that are larger than the person themselves. This is shown quite clearly through the "Better Son/Daughter" in the title, but the other stanzas go on to talk about how the speaker relates a good day to the ways in which their friends and co-workers react to them. They put on a smile and go through their day and try to hide how they feel, but in the same instance as the speaker's mother calling them with a fear of demons, eventually this kind of issue becomes something larger than the person and seeps into their relationships, as well. |
