i think this song is about a high school friend that is remeniscing the memories and how they used to be and hopefully they will remain friends this could be like torward the end of senior year i still remember this moment = she begins reminiscing the moments In the back of my mind = she is probably somewhere bored so she zones out and starts reminiscing The time we stood with our shaking hands = this could have been at a competition and they were but they clearly did it together The crowds in stands went wild = the people were cheering for them so it could have a perfomamnce or a talent contest We were the kings and the queens = they probably did well and the crowd loved them And they read off our names = they won The night you danced like you knew our lives = this could have a celebration dance or their actual perfomance was a dance You held your head like a hero On a history book page = this was a long time ago so she says history and this picture is probably in year book as it is now history It was the end of a decade = they had probably known each other for a long also showing that the year was coming to an end But the start of an age = but more was yet to come so it didnt necessarily end there so their friendship furthered and grew stronger Long live the walls we crashed through = they broke through circumstances together All the kingdom lights shined just for me and you = this could be like at the farewell and they probably refered to their school as 'the kingdom' I passed the pictures around = so this was a long time ago but still not in that day that she is reminiscing so its a day that she is thinking of that she passed pics around Of all the years that we stood there on the sidelines = they probably werent the popular gang this could also show that they were freshmors Wishing for right now = now they are seniors and this is what they wished for We are the kings and the queens = they are finally graduating and they feel on top of the world You traded your baseball cap for a crown = so this could show that they are being capped now for graduation When they gave us our trophies = this could be like the reward so for instance like a certificate And we held them up for our town = they lived in the same area and this ould have been a small town were the people were intimate And the cynics were outraged = those that hated them werent happy 'Cause for a moment a band of thieves in ripped up jeans got to rule the world = they probably werent the most well dressed but they had each other and they lived a simple life and were quite adventourous as adventurous people usually were jeans incase they have to make a run for it Long live all the mountains we moved = they probably had a lot to achieve and they did I had the time of my life = she is reminiscing Fighting dragons with you = they were always together and dragons is a metophor for troubles and bad things One day we will be remembered = they probably did a lot of noticeable things that were wild like maybe spray painting the walls, something that will be talked about Confetti falls to the ground = there were celebrations Can you take a moment Promise me this: = she is now talking to the friend That you'll stand by me forever = that they will always be together But if God forbid fate should step in = she really hopes that this doesnt happen so she says if God forbid And force us into a goodbye = so they will have a reluctant goodbye If you have children someday = she is now refering to the future in general an everyone this friend meets not only the children but aults aswell When they point to the pictures = when they point pictures or when they ask in general about the friend's past Please tell them my name = she wants to be given recognition Tell them how I hope they shine = she hopes that everyone who makes the friend happy in the end becomes happy, this shows that she had great love for this friend |

I think this song is about the singer narrating to us about an a parent trying to talk his child out of ruining life this could either be by suicide or drugs or anything else that ruins a life Step one, you say we need to talk = the adult calls the teen in to talk He walks, you say sit down, it's just a talk = he is trying to calm the teen down as not to alienate him or scare him off He smiles politely back at you = the teen is trying to hide himself behind the smile by showing that he is fine and doesn't need this talk You stare politely right on through = the adult doesn't know what expression to show the teenager so he just stares but not in an intimidating way. this shows the adult's uncertainties Some sort of window to your right = the teen is looking to the adult's right as if there is a 'window' there so he doesn't have to look in the adult's eyes bcoz he sort of sees where this is headed As he goes left, and you stay right = this is an attempt from the adult to make eye contact as he shifts to the right but then the teen looks left and the adults sees that this will go nowhere so he stays right Between the lines of fear and blame = the adult is afraid that he could be the reason for the teen's destructive way and he also afraid of what will end up of the teen so he is sort of shifting between these two emotions You begin to wonder why you came = he is now staring to contemplate why he came as he is feeling unsuccessful at his attempts Where did I go wrong? = this could be a parent wondering where he made a fault in raising this teen I lost a friend = this shows the relationship between the teen and the adult, that it was quite strong Somewhere along in the bitterness = he is referring back to past chats with the teen that failed as they were probably more reprimanding than supportive And I would have stayed up with you all night Had I known how to save a life = this is the adult showing that he would have spent a lot of time with the teen if only had a solution to help the teen, it shows that he would even be there at the most inconveniencing times we know this because he says stayed up all night and not day and most people love to sleep so this is also shows the relationship that the adult had with the teen Let him know that you know best = this is also showing desperation on the side of the adult like hes saying that just listen to me I know best. he has seen that he is going nowhere so he tries the 'I know best' card Cause after all, you do know best = this is the singer showing that he supports the adult Try to slip past his defense = the adult tries to become comfortable with the teen and tries not to reprimand him but come to an understanding with him Without granting innocence = he tries this without making the teen feel vulnerabl and 'innocent' like a toddler in kindergarten being told about the strict rules Lay down a list of what is wrong = he tries to show him what is wrong so the adult sort of feels that the teen feels what he is doing is right so he tries to 'clear' his eyes The things you've told him all along = now we clearly see that this adult has known the teen for quite some time now and they were close cos he says 'all along' And pray to God he hears you And I pray to God he hears you = the singer once again is showing support for the adult As he begins to raise his voice = the teen starts to feel like he is being attacked so he raises his defenses You lower yours and grant him one last choice = the adult stays calm to try show the teen that he is not being attacked and that he is on his side Drive until you lose the road = this means that the teen can carry on with life until he makes it out of this rough patch 'the road' and carry on with life Or break with the ones you've followed = this shows the adult thinks that the teen is a victim of peer pressure and If he carry's on with this he will break with those who have influenced him He will admit to everything = the teen will either open up and possibly get help Or he'll say he's just not the same = or he will have his defenses up and use the famous lines of how things have changed and this will show that he is not gonna change And you'll begin to wonder why you came = the singer shows the choice that the teen has chosen and it is the latter choice, so now the adult is scolding himself as to why he even tried so he has sort of given up |
