Built to Spill – Broken Chairs Lyrics 12 years ago
Obviously, IMHO:

'Broken Chairs your body conforms to' refers to less than ideal situations we learn to get comfortable with. The 'quieted garden' also refers to the same phenomenon - the comfort of a pseudo-ideal life, mired in compromises and creature comforts.

'Lends sustenance when starvation's necessary' is a phenomenon many artists experience. See, a lot of the time, you realize that you can't adequately grow while you're stuck in a comfortable rut - what you need is to be shocked out of your comfort zone. You need 'starvation' - trials and tribulations to help you grow. But you can't, because you comfortable. Broken chairs.

'Long spring days' refers to a long time spent, in youth, enjoying these comfortable, beautiful experiences - but crows, who are mirrors of apprehension - hearkens to the encroaching fear of death. Is it worth it to escape our comfort to experience more of the world before we die, or is the ultimate goal to be as happy as possible?

Basically this song encapsulates a common dilemma - do we choose to undertake hardship to grew and become better, or do we settle for our current, comfortable, but less-than-ideal existence? How do we deal with that question in the face of our encroaching mortality?
