I think this song is about as sleazy as the person who is interpreting it. If you are a 'good' guy then the results show a lighter picture than if you were otherwise. So YOUR character affects the interpretation. I think Fagen wants the listener to decide what it means. Here is what I see: 'Drive west on sunset to the sea' is where the narrator is riding with his friend on Sunset Blvd in LA. He is telling him where to go and being in the friends car, he wants him to turn down the loud crappy music on his cassette deck. Sunset winds down until it hits Pacific Coast Hwy. I have driven that route myself when I was living in Ca. The only other part of the piece that has a strong meaning to me is the 'my friend says no don't go for that cotton Candy" . It is an older man getting involved with a young woman.
Something in the likes of a 40 year old with a 19 year old or in that ballpark. But the narrator (who is always wise in Dan songs) warns that he is playing with fire. It means that young girls eventually mean trouble of some sort. Whether its judgements from peers or getting dumped, you name it. 'The kid will live and learn' is basically you have to go through the experience yourself before you believe what I'm telling you. The rest of the song I haven't really understood much, but I do find the 'you got to shake it baby' ending with the singers is about getting up off the couch and getting out there if you want to find love or a relationship. You aren't going to succeed unless you dance and show the girls that you are on the market.
