In short, it's about a guy who is poor/blue collar/ethnic (... think 'greaser'); who happens to desire a nice white girl. Middle class society thinks he's a bad wolf, even though he has a "big heart" and is trustworthy. This sexually attractive girl is walking in a rougher part of town and he wants to protect from other guys ("someone bad"). He's a good guy who just wants a chance with her ("even bad wolves can be good"). He tries to act as well-mannered, sophisticated, religious as possible ("the sheep suit"). But in the end, because of societal prejudice, he'll have to be satisfied with this brief moment walking with her. |

"Get down on you knees" seems to be a euphemism for oral sex. However, in view of the fact that the "poor boy" has been dominated for so long, the submission of his lover is perhaps more what he is craving. |

Frank hated consumerism. He hated conformismm which leaves behind the "freaks" and "useful minds." And, like any sane person, did not trust America's big, overconfident, over-reaching institutions, so he disparages the efficacy of schools and national policy ("Great society.") He mocks how great Americans think they are, while poking fun at their empty consumerism; so the references to supermarket, hardware store are sarcastic. |

This song is about the paralyzing, blinding anxiety that come from moral finitude. In the song, the singer rightly feels responsible, not for any specific sin (line 4), but for his not living his existence the way he knows he should. This angst is confusing, and also as he sees more his absolute freedom he sees that he is more responsible than he thought, so he sings of his "blindness". However he may be on to an answer - "divine intervention." |
