this is maybe the darkest song ever written by the Arctic Monkeys, which would fit if i'm right about the theme.
it seems to me that this young girl goes to a dangerous neighborhood to score drugs. "three-hundred-and-fifty, no thank you's and nobody flinches" but either the drug dealers or local "thugs" begin harassing her. pestering her with unwanted advances, "[sarcastically] why leave her on her own?" (which were wrongfully transcripted as "i leave her on her own") and /maybe/ they even rape her :( and she has a hard time accepting what's happened and finally opens up to the narrator. (who isn't necessarily the writer, by the way) "if i predicted tears then i wouldn't have said it"; another possible interpretation is that both the narrator and the girl go to score drugs but on their way back get stopped by a group of muggers who rob them and make inappropriate advances on the young girl, who is unsettled afterwards and starts crying because she was so scared of what they could do to her. either way the theme is very bleak and makes me very angry and very sad :((((( |

i think the song can be interpreted as being about this older guy (who may or may not be already some kind of psychotic serial killer) who starts seeing this younger girl who's probably still in school. maybe they start flirting but later the guy becomes very controlling and violent, either when or why she tells him she's leaving. he has a kind of psychotic break and becomes dissociated with reality (this ain't reality) and kills the girl and chops her up into pieces and eats her flesh. he probably starts hallucinating heavily too, really freaky episode. you can also interpret some scenes of necrophilia in there as well. the chorus is probably the peak of his psychotic episode when his denial to accept what he's done and dissociation completely distort his idea of morality, reality and even of his ego. i havent watched Raising Cain, but i'm sure there are some correlations to the story behind the song. i think the verse "i'm a sinner/ring my bell" may be him snapping out of it and realizing what he's done, like a hypnotist snapping their fingers or ringing a bell to take him out of his trance. and just a footnote, the last lyrics are actually "i'll tell you what, i'd get up if i knew why i fell" which i think is him refusing to take responsibility for his actions while having a psychotic episode, because he doesn't know what triggered it. |

this song has bigger chances of being about Billy Corgan than anyone. Dave Grohl isn't bored and cynical/drunk in apathy. Kurt Cobain didn't trust everything/wasn't mean and cruel. if you've ever even heard about the Smashing Pumpkins you're probably aware of how much of a jerk billy is. to how much he contributed to the album was purely for kismesitude. as far as i can tell Courtney Love hates Billy Corgan just like everyone else. "this song is about a jerk, i hexed him and now he's losing his hair". the Smashing Pumpkins were also ridiculously successful after MCIS came out, and since Billy didn't contribute to this song it's very possible that it was written between 95 - 98. altho there is still a big reference to kurt cobain "you burned right out" like in his farewell letter when he quoted Neil Young, and i think you can find the same sort of quoted quoted quote on Reasons To Be Beautiful i think when she sings "It's better to rise than fade away". but honestly i think this applies mostly to Corgan. or it could be about all these people in her life that seem to be always taking from her and pissing on her and gashing her and still somehow always get the better end of it, somehow people still support them better than her. she had to deal with not only the loss but with the press after kurt's death. people still hold hard feelings towards her about it for no apparent reason? she's about as guilty as dave or pat or kim deal could be found. also with the foo fighters break out and the legal fights and everything you know the whole relationship became kinda rusty. i think she said once that even being widely hated she still gets the best fans and dave gets the jocks or something. then theres billy and i think we can all agree that his mere existence irritates. even his fans hate him wow |
