I think this is a song about unrequited love. Do I wait here forever for you? Would you ask me to?
It sounds as if they are apart and he loves her and wants her to be with him. He wants her to show that she feels the same way about him, but the song develops to where there is a sense of inevitability that they won’t make it.
Heartbreaking and beautiful.

I heard this song on the Jools Holland tribute to Amy. It was a duet with Paul Weller, Amy stole the show.
It really is one of my favourite performances. She lifts the song to another dimention.
