In my opinion, you're certainly right about the reference to Aphrodite in the first verse, but after that I think you may be reading a bit too far into it. Aphrodite is the goddess of love and beauty and sexuality, so he is basically just giving the woman he's writing about a huge and romantic compliment by comparing her to Aphrodite. One which is heightened for me by the length and subtlety of the analogy. From then on I just take the lyrics fairly literally, and as being quite separate to the first verse. It's beautiful poetry about his adoring observations of her and his self-deprecating opinions of himself. 'A song in the tree has distracted her mind, another curious form of life has made its presence to her known, and she coos so gently, soft and low': I think this is literally just a verse about the woman's sweet and innocent personality and his fondness of her gentle nature. The lyrics of this song are absolutely some of my favourite! |

Such an evocative song, despite its simplicity... I think he's trying to say his life is complicated and he doesn't always feel stable or really know what it's all about (I don't know who's behind the wheel; Sometimes I feel like I don't know the deal) however he's declaring his love to someone and telling them that despite the messiness and insecurity of everything else, he feels his love is definite. The second verse to me is using the seasons as a metaphor for his love which is as tangible (and 'real') as the seasons and has developed over a period of time. There's also a childish joy and serenity in those lyrics (I carved our names into a tree; I walked on decomposing leaves) which perhaps reflects how he feels around the person. - Just my interpretation. Funny how one can glean so much from a song of such few words ^^ |
