I think people are taking the "molest me" part the wrong way. The meaning is not necessarily sexual; it can simply just mean 'to pester/harass'. With that in mind, I think this song is about a person who is losing faith in their religion and their partner/friend is trying to show them that there is meaning in life without religion. "You get sadder the smarter you get" I think this is referring to the fact that as the affected person learns more outside of their religion, there seems to be inconsistencies in their beliefs with this new knowledge, and this makes them sad because their whole world is being turned upside down by this. Everything they had based their life on (their religion) is looking less likely the more they learn. "You can use your hands for something else/I'll take you further than the scholars can" I think this is pointing out to the person that they don't need their religion anymore if it's causing this inner turmoil. They will learn about themselves without religion. I think "Put down your books and molest me" is saying that the person should go back to how they used to be (N.B. "You used to be such a laugh"). Maybe in the relationship that these people had before, this person used to pester their friend/partner as a form of humour? So they're asking to "molest" in the sense of being annoying, to have fun. NOT in the sexual sense. "Heaven is here, where it needs to be" I think this is a really powerful line. It's saying that the life we have here is heaven, THIS is what's important - the present. I think this is a plea to the person to enjoy their life and find meaning in what they're doing without religion having to play a part. "And there was a time before we were born..." I think this is just tying in the theme of "original sin", the 'garden' being the Garden of Eden. I think the final 2/3 lines is the persons partner/friend telling them that they have enough passion for the both of them for this life. They're basically saying that they will pull them through and make them strong WITHOUT the faith in their religion that they once had. |
