In my opinion this song continues the sophisticated atheistic viewpoints, of the band. Lyrically the song is extremely well-written with many ways to interpret it. By seeing Drew with his thruthmovementaustralia shirts and by watching some interviews, I have come to the conclusion that the song is indeed meant to be atheistic. So my interpretation is as follows. And sorry for the shitty grammar, I’m Danish and it’s been a long time since I went to school. --- “I keep staring at the sky I've been waiting for some time So out of touch So out of mind” Ian keeps staring at the sky (sky being a continuous synonym for religion, deities, faith etc) trying to feel what everyone else feels… ---- “I can feel you there, I won't lie We're all just kids We're all good liars Good liars” He feels pressurized into believing that there is something up there, however he knows that there is nothing and that it’s the “sky believers” that’s got it wrong (liars) ---- “Please try to understand There is no great plan We have no idea What lies beyond our reach Try to understand There is no great plan” Ian wants to let people know that there is no reason in looking to the “sky”. --- “We will cross the line With an open mind” Instead we should cross the line with an open mind which could translate into that we should break this “sky machine” by being open to everything surrounding us (evolution, science etc) --- “Show me what it is Hush my desires Set me on fire” He wants the “sky believers” to show him what all the fuzz is about, but by doing so he must throw all rational thoughts, feelings and logic away, ending in the line “set me on fire” meaning that he wants them to send him off to hell, because there is no way that he is buying their beliefs and superstitions. --- “Please try to understand There is no great plan We have cast our lies To the open skies Try to understand We've another plan We have crossed the line With an open mind” Like the previous chapter, this one states that he believes that there is no “sky” and that he now fully understand that the “sky believers” live their lives based on a lie (we have cast our lies, to the open sky). We (atheists) have another plan and that is to be open to knowledge, science, truth and evolution. --- “We have crossed that line” Meaning that science and evolution already showed us that there is “no great plan” or “sky” --- “You're new to me And I believe You have to be The one we need” Still society pressures him to accept the “sky”, so to keep from conflicting everyone around him he lie about where he stands. (after all, we’re all good liars) --- “Soon you will see it with all Our reasons for trying to justify We hold the fate of the world The dearly departed They won't make a sound They won't make a sound” Ian believes that sooner or later, the “sky believers” will see what we (atheists) have proved for centuries. That there is no “sky” and that we (science and evolution) are responsible for all that have ever happened and all that will ever happen in this world and that there is no reason to believe in those “sky images”, as they will never mortalize nor has they ever been mortalized. --- “You are the same as us all Blood running in our veins Few have the heart of a brave, Now will you run or stay? We hide away our vicious things Don't let them out Even the ones that we don't see Who are always there” Ian believes that we are all alike. “Few have the heart of a brave, now will you run or stay” is a metaphor which translates into “Few have the logic of a realist, now will you leave (the sky) or stay”. This is Ian’s way of stating that we are not all, intelligent enough to seek and embrace the the truth (science, evolution). The last part of this chapter is about Ian putting his guards up. He realized that he has put harm on a lot of people by insulting their intelligence, so he stops for a moment to make peace. “We hide away our vicious things, don’t let them out” and “even the ones that we don’t see, who are always there” meaning that he would be more quiet about his beliefs if the “sky believers” will do the same. The last two lines is a clear reference to all the deities. --- “You are the salt of all You are the salt of the same blood running in our veins Few have the heart of the brave Now, will you run or stay? We hide away our vicious things Don't let them out Even the ones that we don't see Who are always there” This chapter is nearly the same as the previous, although this one starts with a major biblical reference (Matthew 5:10 through 13). Ian believes that we are all the same, and that we (atheist and all other religions) shouldn’t be subjugated to harassment, persecution, hatred etc, based on a biblical passage. And he does so by using this particular biblical passage. A passage that all intelligent people would renounce in the modern society. Who of the “sky believers” now have the courage to stand up and break free? He realizes that he still hurts people and the chapter ends the same way as the previous one. --- “You're new to me And I believe You have to be The one we need” This is the same as the earlier chapter. --- “Take me with you on your sky machine (Please try to understand, there is no great plan) I'm dying to know (We have cast our lies to the open skies) Way out far from what it is we see (Try to understand, we've another plan We have crossed the line with an open mind)” Ian wants them (the “sky believers”) to take him with them on their “sky machine” (Machine in this case, is a metaphor for created by humans, with a sophisticated design) so he can feel what they feel. However he still knows that there is no bigger picture, no “sky” and that the “sky believers” are deceiving themselves (we have cast our lies, to the open skies) and are getting further and further away from the truth (way out far, from what it is we see). He ends the song with the lines “try to understand, we have another plan, we have crossed the line, with an open mind”, meaning that he wants the “sky believers” to understand and accept that we (atheists) have crossed into their domain with and open mind (evolution, science, logic, reason, the truth) . And that we have been there the whole time. |
