Being in law enforcement, this song kinda hits home to me. One of my lieutenants once told me that once you are prepared to die, that is when you can truly begin to live. That does not mean you need to go out and act like you have a death wish, but rather get everything settled in your life (bet it something spiritual, a relationship, whatever) so that if the next time you go out is your last, you would have zero regrets. |

Being a sociology major, I have a somewhat biased opinion about this song, but here it goes. The intro to the song is basically setting the scene of everyone being on the same planet, together. He then goes through and lists all these different country's and cities, further showing how we've divided ourselves. The chorus then comes in and the message I'm taking from it is that no matter how much we divide ourselves - continents to countries to states or provinces to cities - no one focuses on the fact that no matter how different we may consider ourselves we are all in this world together, and that's at least something everyone has in common. The hidden tribe I think is referring to culture. Prehistoric tribes were obvious in their appearance. However today, most societies look relatively the same, yet cultures vary but are invisible to the naked eye. They are our hidden tribes. The rest of the chorus is saying that no matter how different our cultures may be, the way in which we go about integrating ourselves and our goals within those cultures is the same. We all long to love and to understand the world around us. I also thing the title, given some of their religious undertones in previous songs, is referencing Matthew 6:10. Perhaps he's saying that no matter how different we may consider ourselves, our fates will all be the same some day. |

I'm not sure of the personal experiences of the singer, so I'm not sure what his direct application of the song is, but I think it is written to be able to apply to sin in general. He's addressing 2 people/things in the song: the sin itself and Lucifer, the source of sin. He's talking about a terrible sin that he's committed and how overwhelmingly guilty he feels and he's trying to repent. And although he believes in Grace, he's having a hard time accepting the fact that someone could forgive him for the terrible thing he's done. Then he's addressing Lucifer (the "So crawl on my belly" part) by saying that even if God didn't forgive him, and he's condemned to the same fate as Satan, he will still strive to be His (God's) and not Lucifer's. |
