This song is so creepy and I LOVE it. I'm still not sure if the character that Elly is portraying in the song is actually her or just a hypothetical "somebody" to play the character for this awesome song. Regardless, the parts that Elly sings describes a character (hereafter referred to as "her" or "she") that is trying to impress her target, unbeknownst to her that what she's doing is very creepy and stalkerish. Throughout the whole song the listener is led to believe that she's being romantic, thoughtful, and understanding, albeit pushy and persistent. But as soon after the pause, the man creates a build-up singing the lyrics that make you slowly realize that, "holy shit, he's describing her. She's actually being fucking creepy". Now that the listener knows the extent of how creepy she's actually been throughout the entire song, Elly then repeats the chorus a final time after the pause creating an uncomfortably chilling ending. "Well tonight out on the streets I'm gonna follow you And tell you all about a scene that you would kill for You're gonna love what's running right in front of you But you won't see it by the light of the sun" From her perspective, this is her introducing to us the classic trope of people being put in the "friend zone" when she describes that her target (hereafter referred to as "him" or "he", to avoid confusion) is going to love what's in front of him but he won't ever see it because he was blinded by the friend zone. "Come out tigerlily, you're caressing me I'll take you up, I'll turn you on, I'll take your apathy I wouldn't lie to you blossom, won't you let it go I'm gonna give you what you want and don't you know...that you..." She's trying different ways to convince him to reciprocate her feelings and she's even settled with just his apathy for now. She's trying to get him to "let it go" and just be with her. "I know you better than this I could be here when you call I'll make you top of the list And in the crash of the dark I'll be your light in the mist I can see you burning with desire for a kiss Psychobabble all upon your lips" The chorus is describing how good she will be to him. She firmly believes that he's just playing hard to get or just afraid to be with her for some reason because she sees him "burning with desire for a kiss" spouting psychobabble to make up excuses as to why he doesn't want to be with her. "They can sell it all they want but you cannot agree I don't like the taste of -their- morality You'll find your bread and -your- butter where you fake it And put your face in the gutter of a snake pit But -our- communication is telepathy What you give is what you get out of us naturally And we can wait 'til the shadow rolls along And turn the page of the story that has long since found a home" I take the first few stanzas as her singing about how whatever everyone is saying to try and stop their relationship from happening is wrong. You'll get by if you fake it and roll with the norm but you're also putting yourself in a snake pit by not being true to yourself. But nevermind what everyone else thinks because their communication is telepathy and she understands him and she knows that what he actually wants is to be with her despite all the people trying to caution him about her. So she's determined to wait however long it takes to finally be with him because it was basically destiny for her as she sings that she's waiting to "turn the page of the story that has long since found a home". "Have you ever felt like you're being followed? Or watched the ones that held your stare? Turned around to see who's behind you to find there's no one there Pra-lurking in the dark is someone who breathes you night and day There's a friend who wants so much more But if they can have you, they'll never let you walk away" Yep. Creeeepy. |
