This song is OBVIOUSLY about Paul McCartney's death. He and Eldritch were very close friends and this was written to express Andrew's pain at losing his friend. In the song we see that he is driven to heroin to ease the pain. Before his tragic death, McCartney dreamt of having a hair salon with Ringo Starr thus the bricks and mortar reference. It was going to be at 96 Penny Lane. So sad and yet so satisfying.. |

I can't believe that NOBODY gets the meaning of this song!! It couldn't be more straightforward. Haven't any of you ever experienced being "Hugged and tugged down through this tiger's masque for key"?? It happened to me just this morning on my way to Publix! Or "Beetles and eggs and blues and bells and eggs and then blues"? What could more obvious? Beetles=spermatozoa, and then eggs=pregnancy. Of course, that then brings on "the Blues" or more commonly referred to as morning sickness. Bells? What else! A wedding! But after the big party, it's back to getting pregnant and the whole thing starts over again except for the wedding part which may or may not refer to a divorce. Use your heads people! This stuff is nowhere near as complicated as second year English Lit!! "Should I be sewn in hugged I can by not saying" ?? Gimme a break. Piece of cake. Hey, that's a lyric right there! |

This song is obviously about gardening. The protagonist and the agonist as well as the supporting cast, are on their way home from the nursery with a load of herbs and vegetables not to mention a shrubbery. Dark and sticky?? Have none of you people worked with manure? probably the best fertilizer ever! I think the people are elderly and the old man is driving. His wife hates him for putting up such a fuss about starting their garden for this year and at least trying to improve the landscaping at their house. The "more I look" verse refers to squishing around barefoot in newly turned earth and fertilizer (eeewwwww). The old woman needs support because last year her husband decided to watch the Matlock Marathon instead of helping his poor wife with the yard work. It also appears that at some point she was injured in a tragic gardening accident (the places I got hurt, over and over and over, God woman, will you never stop nagging???). Anyway, that's what the song is about. Peter Gabreial told me himself. |

I agree socialpulse, more people should discover and fully appreciate the blues and it's early purveyors. Howlin' Wolf is one of the truly great bluesmen. Along with Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, John Lee Hooker and about twenty others these guys shaped the sound of music up to 2013 and beyond. As for Smokestack Lightnin', I think it's more about another mule been kickin' in Wolf's stall. |

The reference is to heroin. Blues men were notorious drug users, much like modern musicians who owe their existence to the blues. The lyrics throw in a few stereotypical blues references like shooting a man over your woman, and some of that "precious love" but the gist is heroin. Wolf was the best blues singer ever. In fact one of the best singers ever period. |
