@[Austin1993:16324] That's an interesting interpretation, and fits until you get to the verse. It's hard to get to the verse and believe he's not referring to a personal relationship, for me anyways. And considering the respect he had for his father, and his father being a minister, I can't imagine him going there.. |

@[blufadoodle:16323] You are ridiculous.. You can't possibly believe that unless you are childish. If you arent simply trolling, how can you come to that conclusion when it doesnt fit the narrative of the song whatsoever, not to mention the band.. This isn't nickleback! |

Collective soul is one of my favorite bands especially lyrically. I believe this song is definitely about a relationship that has gone sour, as others have suggested, but I have a different interpretation for the "spit me out" part. I was in a relationship once, that made me relate to this song, and i became more interested in analyzing it. I believe it's possible, considering the context, that he is saying tell me about myself. "Don't scream about, don't think aloud
Turn your head now, baby, just spit me out
Don't worry about, don't speak of doubt
Turn your head now, baby, just spit me out"
It's like saying don't get mad, scream, worry, or doubt me. think about what you're saying, and tell him what he needs to work on. show him what he can't see about himself. He often speaks of showing him, and similar things in other songs, and Ed seems pretty open minded. That is why i came to believe that's what he means. just my opinion though. |

@[flyingdaitchman:15922] Well there are plenty of reasons why someone would come to that conclusion. Especially anyone who is a big enough fan of the band to know their history and analyzed all of their discography. I definitely wouldn't be so sure that I would say anyone who believes this had it "confused." Knowing Ed and Dean's upbringing, and how their father was a minister, it should be no surprise that the writer (Ed) would often write of spiritual journeys. It's my personal opinion that Ed is a lyrical genius for making it even possible to debate on this. Ed uses many metaphors obviously, but he also has this ability to write lines that can be taken two (or more) ways, maybe even both being his experience or how he feels. Who knows? I like to think he's able to pull that off, ive accomplished it in some of my work so im sure he could. Anyways, he does this with an uncanny ability to refrain from being vague, which if you can wrap your mind around, is pretty much enough to make you go cross eyed. If you really think about it though, the reason is pretty obvious why Ed chose to approach the topic this way in his lyrics. For one, ppl want their music to connect with as many people as possible, and that is accomplished more by leaving your lyrics open and layered. This also gives you a way of saying something in a way that it is overlooked by anyone who doesn't get it, or hasn't experienced it etc.. If Ed was to be too direct toward the religious side, he would turn off a lot of ppl, maybe even fans. One last thing though.. which do you think could make a non believer think more, if you wanted to help them from a believers standpoint? Making songs that are direct and all praising God? (Btw, I admit, even as a believer, I cant really stand worship music lol) or songs that are more subtle with giving credit, acknowledging, and referring to God? That's not to be confused with being ashamed of their belief.. and I also need to add, this IS just an opinion lol Hell I could be wrong no doubt. |

@[Soundtallica:15921] I agree, I believe Collective Soul all together is underrated. So many ppl know and even really like some of their songs, and somehow have no clue who they are.. It's not like haven't been successful though, I was just pretty much saying I don't get it LOL. As for the uplifting part, I'd say you're right. My actual sister was going through a hard time, I sent her that song, and I was surprised how much it cheered her up and how she reacted. |

@[Demon_Punk:15920] I'm sure you are joking LOL you can't compare collective soul with slipknot.. two totally different types of talent. This song may be a bit soft, and not masculine., but every guy had that side to him. Don't pretend you don't.. to do so stunts emotional maturity, makes you oblivious to yourself (no insight), and in turn you become an asshole with a false ego designed merely to protect your sanity. Gotta love some psychology.. |

When Ed writes a love song, he does it right.. jeez! Can't even imagine the brownie points he got with this one LOL it's amazing how he can write so deep, yet direct. So layered, yet keep a song from being vague. Last but not least, say so much with so few words.. |

@[spiralbrain:15917] @[john8228:15918] You are right about Ed and Dean, and there ARE many subtle Christian/religious overtones in their music. They are completely overlooked unless you are on the same page, because it's not in your face. That's one of the things I love about collective soul, but I believe Ed is also a bit deeper than even that as a song writer. One thing that a great lyricist can do (in my opinion) is have layers to their writing, while magically keeping the message from being vague. Ed is one of the best at this I believe. He often leaves you wondering if he is talking about God or a relationship with a woman. Some times brings up "his father," biological or God? And I swear some of Ed's songs are from him imagining God's point of view. That, or either he wrote those songs sounding uncharacteristically vain, egotistical, superior or something. I highly doubt that is the case though, I'm pretty good at reading people, and I never got that vibe from him. That would also contrast out of character with the message in any other song. I'm very analytical, and being a huge collective soul fan, I have tried tho crack the code to every single one of their songs LOL |

@[stixx_n_strings:15916] I know that comment was 11 years ago LOL but I pretty much agree that is the message Ed, though I have a different take on the "burning alters" metaphor/symbolism. Ed (the lead singer who wrote the song) and his brother who is also in the band, were raised in a religious family. Their father was a minister.. Taking that into consideration, along with the many other subtle Christian/religious overtones in many of their other songs, I believe it is very possible that he is saying he thinks she is blaming God for her problems. |
