| I didn't realize the meaning of the song until I looked at the album cover art. True North is the name of the album. It has a candid picture of a young man without his shirt on, then with a overlay over the lower half of his body of him wearing a button-down shirt and slacks. There is a giant hand with a finger pointing to the young man's brain with the words TRUE NORTH written above it. His True North does not lie in his clothes, job, or material items; it is who he truly is in his mind. I appreciate the album cover, BR! | |

Everyone seemed to interpret the bridge of the song, but what about the other verses? The first verse makes me think of soldiers, especially with the description "the walking wounded," meaning soldiers that have been to war and have returned. The soldiers are a strong example of how we go through so much pain to receive a much smaller reward, yet when we are gone, we don't seem to live on. This song goes out to all the hopeless sinners, With grave allegiances so meaningless and vain I'm not sure if the first part of the verse refers to soldiers (hopeless sinners? hmm...), but soldiers could have a grave allegiance toward our country, resulting in war that is ultimately meaningless and vain. The walking wounded,in a pageant of contenders, Who balance on a rail of pain just for a pail of rain. Soldiers return from their services and they're glorified in the eye of the public, hence "a pageant of contenders." Soldiers sacrifice so much to receive so little in return, which is what I think, "Who balance on a rail of pain for just a pail of rain" means. I think the line "like a bullet as a friend" can relate to the soldier topic as well, since soldiers use bullets to protect themselves from enemies. The rest of the chorus talks about how the only thing that survives, or lives on, after death is your family and your possessions, "blood relations and bricks," which is nothing significant, or "barely mist." |
