The album 16 Lovers Lane is basically following the course of a relationship from beginning to end. 'I'm Alright' to me seems to be about a period when a relationship has ended but for some reason (perhaps for friendship or because it's unavoidable) the two people keep seeing each other. The narrator is obviously sad and angry about the breakup and hasn't yet got over it, it is still a 'hundred weight'. Despite this, he keeps on telling himself (and maybe the person he has split from and others) that he is 'alright'. Most of the songs on the album are about Amanda Brown (her and Grant McLennan were in a relationship for many years). This song is perhaps reflecting Grant's position after the break-up because they are still in a band together ('I can see her during the day'). |

Beautiful song by a cruelly overlooked band. Although the song itself sounds calming and upbeat, I think it's actually about a relationship in termoil. The 'clouds' perhaps symbolise everything that is being hidden from the narrator by their partner, an indication of mistrust or infidelity. The colour blue also features heavily, whereas blue sky or 'air' can mean clarity, it can also symbolise depression or hurt, which I believe the narrator is suffering from. 'I stole their top prize and paid them back with rain' is maybe a nod to retaliation or a sense of punishing the person that has betrayed their trust. |

Great Song, can't believe no-one's commented on this yet. I think it's about two people who are in love and want to make a break at life on their own but their respective parents forbid it. It's possibly also about growing up and wanting to be your own person. Also, there's maybe a pessimistic view of religion in there as well. Perhaps the 'God fearing' and the 'cowards' are the religious ones and the 'godless' and 'faithless' are atheists? |
