Sarah McLachlan – Mary Lyrics 11 years ago
Considering the book is well more than a decade newer than the song, it seems unlikely that the song is about the book.

Sarah McLachlan – Wait Lyrics 11 years ago
Sarah McLachlan was adopted. This song is part of her process of coming to terms with that.

It is written from the point of view of her birth mother, an exercise in imagining what her thoughts and feelings might have been when making the decision to give up her child.

Sarah McLachlan – Fumbling Towards Ecstasy Lyrics 11 years ago
One of the most beautiful and darkly romantic songs ever, and (at least today) my favorite Sarah McLachlan song.

First, the title itself. Sets the mood for the entire song, This isn't meant to happen, it wasn't planned, but instead the characters of the song have become caught up in the moment, almost as if the are fallen and cannot stop the momentum.. Fumbling Towards Ecstasy. .

The first verse is clearly about giving into that passion. With heavy breath and a pounding heart, letting oneself become lost entirely in the moment. To cast fear aside and submit entirely to the raw unfiltered emotion. In context of the rest of the FTE album, I feel it has both the obvious sexual overtone and a 'darker' undertone, one of knowing that there SHOULD be fear, but that the passion has brushed it all away. I'd like to draw your attention to the lyrics of the song "Fear" which is just before this song on the album.
---
From "FEAR"
Wind in time
Rapes the flower trembling on the vine
And nothing yields to shelter from above
They say temptation will destroy our love
The never ending hunger

I fear I have nothing to give
I have so much to lose here in this lonely place
Tangled up in our embrace
There's nothing I'd like better than to fall
--

There is a temptation present here, something taboo. Perhaps one or both of the 'players' here is meant to be faithful to another, but does not want to be... Nothing she'd like better then to fall into the embrace of her partner, but she fears it... At least fears it until the events of this song.

That second verse... my goodness. I see a few people commented here in confusion about the second verse. I have a feeling that those people aren't the sort to embrace the darker parts of their inner self. They will be companions to the demons, allow them to 'dance' why they 'play'. The fear has left, and in its place is a dark acceptance, even a thrill of the forbidden.

Remember making blanket forts as a kid? You would drag all of the chairs out of the dining room, grab as many blankets as you could find and drape them over to create a dark little cave. In the case of this song, they have (figuratively) made a fort, a dark place for just the two of them... A blanket fort but with a romantic bent from the candles. I imagine the 'chairs candles and cloth' is more metaphorical than literal. Drawing closed the curtains, locking themselves away in their self made mid-day darkness. Blocking out all light sound and distraction save for themselves and the flickering candlelight. The feeling harkens back to the blanket forts as a kid. A safe place of peace and comfort... which brings us to the interlude.

She knows she has not yet found true lasting pace and comfort. It is something she knows she must work for, but is able to recognize the small moments that meant so much. She's found temporary peace and comfort in the embrace of her partner, and while she knows it may bring her some hardships, but she welcomes it in the moment and feels that this course of action may ultimately lead to a more permanent peace.

And finally the chorus, which ties it all together.

After finally giving in to her desires, she realizes that it cannot be undone, and she will not allow her choices to become a burden, when all she wants is the love she has found. Again, there is something taboo at work here, and she knows that a struggle may be ahead of her due to her actions. Still, even if it brings she to tears at times, brings her to anger at others, she won;t deny the passion at work to cause such strong emotion, and she wont let herself fear it.

Wholly by chance she has found Ecstasy, and she refuses to be afraid of it, the good or bad, the dark or light, she wont let herself be frightened anymore.

Rasputina – My Little Shirtwaist Fire Lyrics 12 years ago
It is definitely 'alcove,' as

One of my friends, Annie Rosen, was an examiner on the ninth floor. She was near a window when the cry of fire was raised... she got it open and climbed on a little fire escape. The fire was coming up from the eighth floor and in getting from the ninth to the eighth her hat and her hair were burned.... (From "Washington Place Fire"
Rosey Safran, The Independent 70, April 20, 1911)

If you look at photos of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, you can see that the fire escape (there was only one) was set into a small alcove in the side of the building.
Also, it wasn't the end, since Annie Rosen lived.
