If you haven't yet, watch for the visual metaphorical analogies Cobain cleverly has placed in his music video. This song is not trippy at all in fact it's pure brillance and extremely profound. SYMBOLISM. METAPHORS. ANALOGIES & DUALITY Heart shaped box = a Chinese antique heart shaped opium snuff box. The video shows a field of poppy flowers over and over again which is where opium and eventually heroin comes from. We all know that Courtney Love was the one who introduced "drugs" to Cobain. Whether or not she wore an opium snuff box locket in the shape of a heart or just owned one and carried it around with her, I am unsure of. What I do know, is that you can start off as a junkie and eventually do anything for that next mellow feeling. If your brain associates that good time with a hot chick or a hot dude then it can eventually turn into either unrequited love or a mutual love. If you get high together it might develop into feelings of mutual attraction because you're experiencing that mental and possibly physical bond but the drugs are what you share in common that unite you. The papal authority, aka: the "sick" guy in the hospital bed who ends up being crucified on the cross, is wearing a pope hat. This symbol of crucification is an example of duality. The man on the cross represents both Cobain and the papal authority. The papal authority think that the way Cobain is falling in love with Courtney Love is not right because it's not traditionally acceptable behavior, they represent Jesus but in all reality their judgements on cobain's life is doing them more harm then good. If you also view Cobain as the one on the cross them you see it as him being crucified for his way of life. Cobain mocks the papal authority by pointing out that Christians were known to do much worse things throughout history then what he's doing. The fact that they crucify themselves is a mockery and shows hypocratic behavior because all throughout history the religious traditional "values" are whats behind the formation of the KKK and much more. Cobain isn't hurting anyone unlike the religious traditional values that those who believe in them have hurt others... He's only hurting himself.. Cobain obviously had a hard time adjusting to becoming famous and I think this song is a perfect example of the struggle one artist undergoes to remain true to themselves whether or not someone likes it or not. love is a messy thing and there is no right way to go about finding and developing it. |

| Just by watching the video it makes me think that it's about how society judges the homeless and thinks that they do nothing when in the end this video shows that some of them are selfless people who care more about giving back to the younger generation by giving up their own wants and desires. That kind of life is not looked at as a glamorous way to go about living. Today everyone mostly cares about themselves and what they want... to hell with the rest of them.. We mostly look the other way when someone else is down on their luck or when we feel they don't measure up to us.. that they must be doing something wrong. In all reality if that thought ever passes our minds it is us that is doing something wrong and what's sad, is that we don't even realize it at the time. | |

| This song suggests Political Reform/ the Fall of the Bastille & compares it to today's hardships. The heads on a stake are King Louie XVI/today's wealthy who take more than they need. It's based on the French Revolution when the royals used up the towns wealth for themselves. The Enlightenment period went on & people began thinking for themselves instead of just obeying and following the royals. Religion was questioned & any form of authority. The Guillotine was invented & much blood was shed. | |
