I agree with the majority of your post...EXCEPT the cards part, lol. You would have sold me on it except for the line right after that. The line about the red ink in the leather just reminds me too much of an old accounting ledger and that would make more sense with the word being COST and TIME that it took to plan the wedding.

I actually enjoyed your interpretation and before I read any other comments, I was absolutely sold that you hit the nail on the head (mostly because I was taking your word about the information on the Ottoman Empire and you expressed it in a believable way, lol). After reading the comments, however, I do think the song is actually talking about a marriage long long ago. Nice interpretation though!

The movie you're thinking of was called Say Anything starring John Cusack. The song by Peter Gabriel that is playing is "In Your Eyes". Came out in 1989.

The word is "COSTS". It appears the song is indeed referring to a wedding. The COSTS and the time it took (referring obviously to the cost of a wedding and the time it takes to plan one).

Soon it's all lines of red in a leather book (the red lines in the leather book are probably referencing an accounting ledger that would have been used in that century. Red usually refers to money going out aka being spent.)
