To me, this song goes through each of the stages of a breakup. Possibly from both sides of the breakup accepting that it cannot work even though they are in love. [What the fuck is this world Running to, you didn't Leave a message, at least I Coulda' learned your voice one last time] A realisation that everything was about to change and he had no control over the change. His whole world about to fall apart. Possibly realising that given another chance to "learn a voice" he could have seen his mistakes and changed them. Or put in more effort to make it work. But it was too late. [Daily minefield, this could Be my time by you? Would you hit me? (2x) Oh oh oh...oh whoa whoa...ow...] Blaming the other person for how they have reacted. A daily minefield that they attribute to the other person. "Would you hit me?" is possibly rhetorical that he feels betrayed and let down when he wanted to give it another chance. This could come from either person in the relationship. [All the bills go by, and Initiatives are taken up By the middle, there ain't gonna be any middle any more And the cross I'm bearing home Ain't indicative of my place] The "middle" here is that place between wanting to go back and moving on. Both of them being in denial. The initiatives are them both realising that there cannot be a middle ground. They have to accept that it's over. The relationship no longer defines their place or importance to one another. The "cross" could be a reference to star crossed lovers? [Left the porch (2x) Oh oh oh... Hear my name, take a good look This could be the day Hold my hand, walk beside me I just need to say...] Leaving the porch suggests that they'd be close to accepting it, just hovering in the "porch" for a while. Then some wishful thinking towards meeting again one day. After a breakup, people tend to have things they wish they'd said. [Hear my name, take a good look This could be the day Hold my hand, lie beside me I just need to say I could not take a-just one day I know when I would not ever touch you Hold you...feel you...ever hold...never again... Yeah (12x)] Finally accepting the end and moving on but amicably, reminding each other or themselves that they hadn't intended to cause either any hurt along the way. |
