This song could have several different meanings. Like a lot of Florence + the Machine's songs, the lyrics are somewhat vague, and could be applied to a few different scenarios. The first is the more obvious one, to most people, where she's in a relationship, and she's somehow dragging it down, whether that's because of depression or other mental illness, or just emotional baggage in general. The second is religious. Like a lot of their songs, there's some religious language in the lyrics. I'm sure there are others, maybe just one or two, but that's all I know. Personally, although this song was written for Twilight and is on the soundtrack (and does work pretty well with the situation there), I think more of the Doctor and River's relationship in Doctor Who. My first thought was actually of Rose and the Doctor, but River has more emotional baggage, and the feeling with her and the Doctor's situation seems generally more fitting to the lyrics, especially with the lines: 'This will be my last confession "I love you" never felt like any blessing Oh Whispering like it's a secret Only to condemn the one who hears it With a heavy heart' With the way their timelines are, professing their love would only be more painful, for both parties. In general, their relationship is a lot more desperate and centered around vainly trying to support each other. In fact, the 'I' could be referring to River or the Doctor. It would still work with Rose and the Doctor (and I ship both Doctor/Rose and Doctor/River, btw), but to me it seems more like a Doctor/River song. |

It's pretty clear that this is about alcoholism, from what Chris has said, and how with an addiction you feel like you need it, and like it helps you, but then even when you've realized how bad it is for you, you can't quit, and you know even while it seems to help, it's, in fact, still hurting you and tearing you up inside. But this could be applied to another situation, too, where a person takes the place of the drug/alcohol, with a similar situation. You feel like you need this person to keep going on with your life, and at first everything seems okay, for the most part, but then you realize that they're hurting you, but you can't leave because you think you need them. |
