I just noticed this when i listened to the song last, in the background (Most prominent at the beginning.) there's a breathy sound. Its a respirator! Like they use in hospitals when someone is on life-support. Didn't Homme have an problem with asphyxiation when he had knee surgery? Wow, there's a lot of things on this album that relate to his near-death experience. |

I remember for the longest time i thought the song said "I got my fathers sense/And my dick from his pants.". As in he inherit's his life from his Father and it makes him feel empowered with responsibility. "Big brother pants." works just well i guess, but i still like my original misinterpretation! As for an overall interpretation, it's a song about growing up and realizing that we never really grow up. In the end you're small as a child and small as an adult, infantile and meaningless you remain, no matter what, so in the end you just decide to enjoy your life however you can ["Playing in the sand", etc.]. |

I think this song is about conformity, as had been stated by others, but i also think it's like a representation of a woman being objectified. "Must obey the rules/Must be tame and cook" [Being the perfect wife/housewife.] "No staring out at clouds/Must stay on the ground" [Not being allowed to pursue her own dreams/interests." "Babes on display/Angels in cage" [The way men place women on pedestals and such." "Must be pure and true/Must contain my views." [Virginity representation, the way women are often scorned if they admit their sexual activity. Plus how in times past, a women's viewpoint was laughed at." "Must be something else/ Must be something good." [The longing for something better, obviously.] That's one possible meaning of the song that i see. Although it's fairly safe to say it's a song about conforming and being restricted, regardless. I absolutely LOVE the final words and for me this song is the perfect way to end an album, it's so underrated! |
