Regarding songwriting, Brandon has often acknowledged in interviews post Hot Fuss that he wanted to get away from writing songs that conflicted with the moral values that he was raised with. He's mentioned twice that he prefers to be a "positive force" in this world, and I think it could be said that this song is geared towards instilling hope collectively to the people in their home country (the US). Most powerful to me are the lines: When they break your heart When they cause your soul to mourn Remember what I said Boy you was battle born Naysayers, fear, and negativity seem to outweigh encouragement, audacity and positivity in today's day and age. It seems Flowers is communicating to his listeners that the negativity will come your way, but you have to be part of the outnumbered positive force and remember that you have a fighter's heart. This stanza could apply to the nation as a whole, or to individuals looking for some form of inspiration to get through the harsher times of life that will come their way due to the disintegration of moral values in today's society. |

i had always thought of Brandon as the protagonist of this song - being that he "talks like a gentleman" & he "doesn't look a thing like Jesus" with his short haircut. of course the heart throb status as the leading frontman for one of the biggest bands of the 21st century also lends to him potentially being the "beautiful boy" that a prospective woman seeks to ease her unhappiness for the way that life had panned out for her. The band played this as an encore, the last song at the end of the show in San Francisco on April 27th, 2013. Anyone who's seen the band live knows that Brandon heavily feeds off of the energy that the crowds give them during their gigs (They've been quoted as saying the newer songs are made with the intent of fan involvement & ones that keep them on their toes when performing live). When he sang the last line of the song "He doesn't look a thing like Jesus," he was looking into the crowd and I mouthed to him "Is that you?!" I swear he caught this & nodded no but gave us all a double point back in appreciation (youtube "the killers when you were young april 27 2013"). I'm guessing the song's not anecdotal & that he took the eye as an observer when writing this and wanted to instill hope in young girls' hearts that there still are romantics out there, and to recognize a good thing when it's right in front of you. If you think I'm delusional, also youtube "Brandon Flowers breaks up fight." This illustrates my point that he's always gauging the crowd for reactions.... in fact the Battle Born album was started b/c they had such poor fan support at a show in Santa Barbara!!!! |
