| I love this song. It speaks of the relationships that we are in danger of being in with our partners, society, media and nations. Settling for stagnation, being controlled ( or controling) but not involved. Driven by either fear, apathy or manipulation but never accounting for our actions. | |

Codex The good thing about evocative and enigmatic pieces of art; is how it can stimulate the audience’s mind to creatively operate on different levels. It provokes us to bring meaning to the seemingly ‘meaningless’ or less than apparent. It seems that the opening line; “Sleight of hand”, is central to what the song is concerned with. It infers that there has to be some recipient to which the ‘sleight of hand’ is being performed upon. A skilful hiding of the truth in order to gain some advantage, a manipulation of reality, conveying, ‘all is not what it seems’, or ‘Someone is ‘playing’ a trick on someone else’. By definition, the person being deceived has to be, to some degree, ‘innocent’ to the deceiver’s operations…….But what’s the trick and what is hoped to be gained? Each line of the song is ‘reassuringly directive’, persuasive in nature. Therefore, the essence of the song, portrays that someone is attempting to ‘cajole’ another into doing something that, either they are hesitant to do, or would not do on their own volition. “Jump off the end.” -- is an act, one which the individual takes responsibility for (albeit ‘encouraged’). One chooses to jump as opposed to being pushed. To ‘jump off the end’ and into something else, implies that once in motion, it is irreversible. It’s the end of a once held position (innocence?), which cannot be retrieved. “No-one around.” Possible reassurance, that what’s about to happen cannot be seen, it won’t bring them shame; implying that otherwise, it might be seen as shameful? “Dragonflies” symbolic of hot summer days. Well, it’s the only time when I see them ☺. So, the scene is set; two people together on a hot summer’s day, somewhere remote. One saying to the other, “come on, there’s no one around, there’s nothing wrong with it, it’s not going to hurt anyone, it’s perfectly natural”. The ‘perfectly natural’ is an interpretation of ‘the water’s clear and innocent’, signifying purity and nature. So “Slide your hand”………..But where? I think this is a sexual reference. The start of the ‘pay-off’ to the deception; the attempt to ‘trick’ someone into ending their innocence, by persuading them that this act itself, is ok, safe and natural. The real trick is that the ‘innocent party’ will ultimately feel responsible for what is about to happen, for it is they who initiated ‘the jump’ (the sliding of their hand). I guess the extent of the malevolence of such a manoeuver, like the song itself, is open to interpretation and of course…………..misinterpretation. |
