This is my 1st post and ive never been good at understanding songs as have very little knowledge of literature, politics, history etc, but the music I love is always compact with these themes, such as Bruce, U2, Manics, Lizzy, Dylan. Anyway how Ive always thought of this song was about is a man who struggles with gambling but his ex wife never cared for it. He lost everything and his wife no longer has anything to do with him because he refused to "cut it loose" and as such it "dragged him down". But he cant stop because he is an addict. Hell still be on "that hill" to bet because he "cant stop" and he'll bet everything he got. Looking at the lyrics my understanding of the song mightnt tie in fully, as i said earlier poetry and literature aint my strong points and I also always thought the lyric at the start of the second verse was "Everybody's got a secret sin" which I thought was his gambling addiction. I do not know who sonny is. |
