Matchbox Twenty – Push Lyrics 12 years ago
Pretty simple song to understand if you've been in an abusive relationship. The girl I was engaged to was exactly this girl. She was convinced that no-one loved her and she was desperate to be loved. Therefore she became angry and depressed if anything rocked her little world.

She then became violent and even psychopathic.

She would want to dictate the rules, play it for what it was worth and do the pushing.

The second verse is in two voices/ tones and is a conversation. One about judgement and reason. I'm sure I've also had that conversation!! This is an amazing piece of poetry and one of my very favourite songs. I've moved on since and this song still tells that part of the story of an abusive relationship - pretty much as Rob Thomas described in his interview.

Supertramp – Hide In Your Shell Lyrics 12 years ago
I keep coming back to a semi-religious, spiritual meaning for this song and for the whole album.

"Too frightening to listen to a stranger"

I really think throughout this album - stoned or not - Hodgson was drawing metaphors to Christ/ Buddha or whatever. "Please let me near you" "I know what you're thinkin' see what you're seein'" - all seems to imply reference to a greater power.

"I can help you, if I can help you just let me know" ... a benevolent one!

The song title I think possibly alludes to 'why don't people listen to something a bit smarter'.

And now I'll surprise you by saying I'm a devout atheist! So I just think this is that classic question of 'why don't people listen to [Insert smarter belief or value system here]'

Supertramp – Bloody Well Right Lyrics 12 years ago
I always thought that Supertramp, the name was some reference to Jesus - and NO I am not a religious nut. Under this belief, I concluded that this album works at many levels with the 'Crime of the Century' being the stripping of humanity and decency from people, until they become Rudy and eventually are 'crucified'.

So if you think of it as a rock opera like that (which were very popular at the time). The song before - School - is the start of the journey. It points to how ridiculous schooling is. Now I believe "Rudy" has started to complain about things. On one hand he's being told - yeah, yeah boy - you go ahead and complain, you're quite right. But really the 'machine' wants him to 'hush his face'. I think Asylum goes on to say 'well we're all crazy really'. Dreamer goes on to examine wishing for something better and Rudy is the reality check.

If Everyone was Listening is the song that made me think of the Jesus connection. It sounds very much like it's saying "man this has been happening since the days of Jesus - ain't no one gonna listen to that". And then Crime of the Century is saying - "yeah, it's the machine and guess what, you're part of the machine"

Perhaps in my younger days I thought way too much about this album!! :-)
