Brandon Flowers in an interview said that this song was not about America. He added that he had a grandma named Dixie and his brother was actually born on Independence Day. It's more about him making it in Los Vegas (as he lived across from Sam's Town casino) and his struggle to create a life in Vegas. This is consistent with the idea of him needing someone to take him home (to Utah where he was from) once in awhile, but he would be able to make it in Vegas. |

| The Killers – The Rising Tide Lyrics | 12 years ago |

I once found an interview with Brandon Flowers where he was talking about his work in the casinos in Los Vegas. The way he described it was he remembered looking and working underneath the "neon lights." So I think this song might be about gambling addiction. Between the images of the streets plated with gold (promise of fortune), the venom in the veins (addiction), and finally the realization that you are not winning money (the rising tide). Just a thought and some input. |
