It is not sarcasm. Sarcasm is always personal, always jeering, and always intended to wound.
It's irony (saying one thing and meaning another) and it's satire (blending wit and humour with a critical attitude toward human activities and institutions).
Most of Ray Davies' lyrics use irony and satire.
But he still values a lot of the English traditions. |

I think that "he is so gay" should be taken literally. Carefree, happy. That was the primary meaning of the word. Besides, it says "He is so gay" --- so happy, so carefree. |
