I'm sure Mick Ronson's wife would be very upset by your comment that Mick and David had some sort of fling (Capnimo). They were close, but not that close, I guess no one really knows how many boys or girls DB ever slept with but there were probably many, certainly the guy who designed the Ziggy outfits (he's dead now) boasted about their sexual encounters and Angie had hinted at some wild times which they BOTH shared. This song for me is more about his letting go of the past, killing off the earlier, damaged characters and realising that, like us all, he had some faults. It was after the album from which Ashes to Ashes came from that Bowie broke out into a mainstream audience, got debt-free and made mega-bucks. His work with Nile Rodgers followed and Bowie hit the morning radio playlists. I see this track as the path to that international recognition/acclaim; it was his therapy; a cathartic moment caught in a tune. |

Bowie said he wrote this on a car journey outside Seattle having seen 'domes' on the horizon. The rest of the lyric is a masterpiece of the cut up techneque which the man just loved to employ and hence should not be read into too much. The line 'With snorting head he gazes to the shore etc' just brings the lyric together poetically for me and is the reason its one of my favorite songs. |

Like most of the album, from which this track comes, the song's real appeal (for me) comes from Mike Garson's soaring piano work. The piano sounds in say Hunky Dory (done by Rick Wakeman) just add body to the tracks (except for, say, Life on Mars) but Alladinsane is just crammed full of smart keyboard licks. Starting from the psudo-Germainic, high-kicks of Time and ending with this luscious feast of seductive melody the album is a masterpiece of musical theater. I love it. |
