Echo and the Bunnymen – The Killing Moon Lyrics 10 years ago
Ok, I had another thought. Instead of it being about a woman he is in love with, the woman in the story is Death personified as a female (which is interesting because it is usually personified as a male in mythology.). So, the rare "blue moon" occasion would be death which happens only once in our lives, so it is pretty rare, but Fate assures that it will come to us all. The Killing Moon just refers to the time we are taken into the arms of Death. Not as happy of a story as the first one I came up with, but it makes sense to me.

I totally agree, though I am not sure if it was intentional, but it really does fit quite well.

This is such a great song. I have been listening to it a lot lately and thinking about the lyric meanings. I like the idea someone here posted that it was inspired by The Mists of Avalon. It certainly does fit the Kevin the Bard being locked into the Oak Tree scenario, but that just may be a fun coincidence. I've decided that the lyrics, "Fate. Up against your will. Through the thick and thin, He will wait until, You give yourself to him," are referring to Fate himself or Fate personified as a male, (which is interesting because, in mythology, Fate is often portrayed as a woman, or women--The Three Fates).I don't think this part of the song is referring to another lover, therefore the scenario of the arranged marriage doesn't fit to me either. I think the lyric "Under blue moon" is referring to the rarity of the situation. People often say, "once in a blue moon," referring to something that happens rarely. What would be the rare thing in this story? Love. He is completely in love with a woman who has spellbound him, to the point that it is his fate, which we are all helpless to. This is why he says "up against *your* will." The "your" is referring to all of us. It's a generalized "your" and does not refer to anyone specifically. The killing moon is a reference to the Hunter's Moon, when the moon is bright and full at dusk and long into the night, extending the visibility and hunting hours. He has been metaphorically hunted and captured by this amazing woman with "magic lips." It may be that what made it cruel was his utter inability to do anything to keep himself from falling in love, or it may be that he lost this woman and so the love became a cruel torment. Not really sure about that part. Anyway, great song and great thoughts here in the comments on its meaning. <3
