| Pink Floyd – The Final Cut Lyrics

@[ballzofsno:28458] I think you have eloquently summed up what the song is about. Although, I would differ on the "jaded" part. I think "Far from flying high in clear blue skies/I'm spiraling down to the hole in the ground where I hide" is a description of severe depression. It's a beautiful day with clear blue skies, yet he is incapable of seeing it for what it is. He wants to hide. He wants to remain in the dark where he feels safe. He can barely define the meaning of the moment in time because he has no words to express the emotions he feels; he can only cry.
When he does find love, he is reluctant to show his true self. He is reluctant to show any weakness. He is afraid that his love will be spurned, that it will go away, He is convinced that he is inherently unlovable.
As to the final cut line that many interpret to be a reference to suicide could also mean that he has never had the nerve to make the final cut from the self he shows the world, and the person he knows himself to be truly. He has never had the nerve to just be him. Hence, making the final cut.
PS. This is more for the gentleman who responded to your interpretation. I do not think the "final cut" means suicide. |

@[mrwriter:24929] Ummm, Syd Barret did not leave Pink Floyd due to having dropped too much acid; he left due to mental troubles and increasingly erratic behaviour that has been attributed to either schizophrenia or Bipolar disorder. To chalk it up to his having done too much acid certainly does not pay tribute to one of the founding members of what became an amazing band. |

@[mayankuniyal:24928] It is a good as an interpretation as any other. Pink Floyd is not easily picked apart as one would in a poetry class. |

I personally like the racy version of the video, and I am female. But, maybe, it is because I am an adult and am not easily offended anymore. A bunch of skinny girls in lingerie are just not that racy. |

@[Akaneon:22165] Duran Duran's earlier stuff was all bubble gum pop on the surface, but there was something a bit dark about their subject matter and lyrics....if you choose to look beneath that rock. |

@[crazycasualty:22164] I don't think it is necessarily about porn, just exploitation in general. However, the "girls" in question are making massive amounts of money: "Wider, baby, smile and you've just made a million"....exploitation and money, they go hand in hand |

I think that while it may be a tribute to Prudence Farrow, it also applies to all people who do not want to break out of their shells and experience life. "The sun is up, the sky is blue, It's beautiful and so are you," seems to imply a person who does not realize that they are as beautiful (both spiritually and perhaps physically) as a sunny day. I have always loved this song because it reminds me that regardless what is happening in life, the sun will rise, the sky will be blue, and it will be as beautiful as life itself. |

@[ADDGirl:16840] I am sorry to hear of your friend. I am currently dealing with something similar. A very good and close friend of about 30 years is dying and has become very depressed. He used to be the life of the party, but he is no longer. I do miss him a great deal; I just try to remember how he used to be and sometimes I do cry over the "loss" of one of my best friends. "Wish You Were Here" has always had the effect of making me think about the past and how different the present is. It has always made me really think. The whole album makes me think about change and loss and trying to get through it the best you can.
Again. I am sorry to hear of your friend. It's hard to lose people you love.
Namaste,

I still think it is about superficial people who rely on others for their sense of self, and the writer is telling them not to ask him what he thinks because they might get hurt by what he thinks. |

I always thought this song was about a Welsh witch who was very enticing to men? Where's the abortion part of the song? I am confused |

I think it is about a love that has ended badly, and she is hoping the "child within my heart" can heal from this loss and subsequent change. When you build your life around someone or an idea that you really want to see succeed, when it fails, it is devastating. It is like the landslide wiping you off the mountain that you have climbed, and now must come down. I think it is primarily a song of loss, grieving that loss, and then getting up and trying again. |

Very interesting. I always thought this song dealt with loss and grief and healing one's wounds. Most people prefer to do that in private, hence the reflection in the snow being buried by the landslide. Also, we all carry an inner child within us who just wants to be loved, and while our adult selves can go on fairly normally, the child can't process the loss, but even they too, will get older and learn to process that which they lost. It's a complicated song, and I like the way you break it down. |

Interesting. I always thought it was about a broken love affair, and how to heal the wounded child within all of us. When you do end a long relationship, it does feel like a landslide. That's what I always thought, anyway. |

I think it is a song about people caring too much about superficial things: "I can't sing, i ain't and my legs are thin.." So, the writer is telling the audience that you may not want his opinion of you because he would be brutally honest, and you might not like what you hear. Especially if you're in the high maintenance, superficial category....... probably best not to ask. |
