It seems pretty clear that the song starts off from the perspective of a soldier dying on the battlefield alone. He cries to God to save him, both from the physical destruction of the war, and the emotional damage it has done to him. He knows his mother is praying for him... he tries to comfort himself by imagining that someone up there heard her prayer. Only "someone" because God seems gone. Then we hear his mother's prayer. (not his wife's as is typical from war songs!) ----------- However, I took it for myself, and it has much more meaning for me. My war is metaphorical and personal, and, to me, i can't hear it any way but that, even for both halves of the song. I wept when I heard it. |
