I haven't read through all the pages of comments (because there are so many!), so maybe this has been mentioned already, but: This song makes me think of Arsenic and Old Lace. Except here there isn't any humour to compete with the creepiness. (Summary for those unfamiliar: Two eldery aunts develop a habit of killing lonely old men who come to board at their home. They think that they're being nice by allieviating the victims' loneliness & rendering them "so peaceful". They're "good Christians", and that is repeatedly alluded to ironically.) Eleanor Rigby sounds like she is a lonely -probably eldery- woman. Probably the church custodian, since she's cleaning the church up after a wedding. Father Mackenzie kills her. Possibly because he knows how lonely she is, and sees it as a mercy killing -just like the elderly aunts in Arsenic & Old Lace do. He understands that killing her is at least legally wrong, whether or not he has any moral ambivalence, so he buries the body alone. |
