I imagine this as a guy who works a lot or travels a lot sort of trying to make up for not always being there for his lover. It can also be about a guy thinking about what his wife will do after he's dead and how he will make plans for her to be taken care of but given what I know about ben gibbard, its more about just not being there physically while he's on tour, and wanting his lover to know that he is still with her in thought. |

This song is about andrew and kelly's relationship as it started to fall apart while he was touring. He is enjoying himself at first, touring then, at his friends family's hotel, while she counts the minutes he is gone. Eventually tour gets old, and they stand like statues at the airport gate waiting for tour to be done. Once he returns home he does not feel the same, doesn't know how to relate and is bruised. he wishes he could go back to normal and that he didn't feel this way but he needs his space. hence their breakup and the writing of this album. I've always felt like this song was the backbone that the rest of everything in transit stemmed from. |

I'm pretty sure this is referencing her time in california. Like in "the angels hung around" she seems to display her distaste for the west coast and it seems like this explains why. She was obviously very depressed while living in CA, although it was "her greatest escape that she left up to fate" she can't even really enjoy it because of her own issues. and then this part: "And the coast that you've seen though you're watching them weekly
You've cursed all perfect days as you walked away
I can hear you say, "Jenny, you're barely alive""
- is about her decision to leave CA, how she knows she didn't make the most of her time and took it for granted while she was stuck in her thoughts, but she is leaving anyway. |
