It even says on Wikipedia that this version is a cover of a 1937 song by J.E. Mainer's Mountaineers. If you know anything about that time period, you can safely assume the lyrics are from the point of view of a man going off to war. That's why it seems like the listener can't come with. Even without knowing who it was originally by, I'd assume the singer was going off to war. It's as simple as that. Get it together, you lot. Looking into it way too fucking much. |
