Fuck!! I can’t believe there aren’t any comments on this hell of a song after 15 years of its release... about the song, my guess = a girl leaves a guy - who’s still very much into her - alleging she wants be alone...time passes by and he still wants her but still can’t make sense of her decision, moreover, can’t make sense of why she suddenly changed when they were still together, becoming oblivious to him and the relationship: "Why do you pray? To be on your own, to be on your own" He’s mad, angry, frustrated at the indifference of the girl (more so cause it sounds like he’s still trying to see her but she doesn’t give a damn anymore): "But I don't see your face anymore Throw your knuckles down to the floor” "'Cos there is passion going to waste And you'd let loving die in your haste” The next lines - my fav. ones - show the guy’s impotence and resignation about his situation: "You took a knife to my life but as long as you say your sorry You took the sand from my hand but as long as you say you care” (you used me and wasted my time as if nothing and you barely seem to care...) However I can’t figure out the meaning of the first lines of the song and how they fit with the rest: "Money in the bank ain't worth what it was since the bullion sank in a pool of sharks" "And I don't wanna wait for the banks to break And the waved to close on our perfect place" About the title... Shanghaied: 1. In slang, "shanghaied" means to be kidnapped or tricked into doing something, often against one's will, and particularly to be forced into a situation or job. It originated from the historical practice of kidnapping sailors in the 1800s, often by drugging them, and forcing them to work on ships, especially those bound for Shanghai, hence the term. 2. The traditional way of Shanghai was to drug someone and put them on a boat while they were still unconscious. When the person woke up, he was in the middle of the ocean (in the middle of nowhere) heading for “Shanghai". Since he could not return to the place from which he was taken (and being weeks away from arriving at his destination), it was better for him to get to work (regardless of the “disconcerting” of the situation). My 2 cents... |

@[lovesoprnaos:52124] Damn!! you are not only fuckin' crazy but quite stupid as well...the core incident on the Sopranos - which develops the plot - is that in the pilot episode Tony realizes is depressed and decides to seek help/see a shrink... so the song's line "got yourself a gun" do refer to committing suicide... |

| @[Kevin254:50774] "the clue is in the last line", nailed it man!! If it wasn't for the last line I'd agree with the interpretations from other posts; the song being about a nymphomaniac girl, having great sex, getting involved in a fucked up toxic relationship, and the guy looking desperately to leave the relationship but being unable to... Nevertheless, that last line changes it all: the guy finally gives up, gives up trying to figure things out, and trying to convince himself he doesn't miss her. He accepts he loves her and he needs her... and not only for the sex, if that was the case why would he want her back home? (I mean, you don't move in with someone just for the sex, no mater how great! you keep seeing each other and fuck, fuck, and fuck each other brains out!! but you Don't move in together, Come on people!!)... additionally, that last line uses the word "home" (a more meaningful one than "house").... Fuckin' Love! (more so, the first love); passion, attraction, obsession, elation, confrontation, pure madness!! But love nonetheless…at least as it was in the old days... | |

@[E:45140]-Double Every thought that I repent Is another chip you haven't spent And you're cashing them all in, Where do we begin to get clean again Can we get clean again I think the 1st verse is about all the wrongdoings he has done to her (thoughts he repent), of which she has kept score and now is using them to make him feel guilty, so she can keep drinking without him objecting (cashing in the chips). I walk home alone with you And the mood you're born into Sometimes you let me in And I take it on the chin Her mood and temper have been fuckd up for a while to the point he sometimes feels she has been always like that (the mood she is born into), still he tries to get closer and get her to open up, but when he does she backlash to him... The God of Wine comes Crashing through the headlights of a car That took you farther than You thought you'd ever want to go (Agree. An accident happened which triggered her emotional and drinking problems) And the siren's song that is your madness Holds a truth I can't erase All alone on your face I think the "siren's song" phrase is to be taken more metaphorically, such as an inner rage or imbalance she can't conceit (despite her trying to drown the memories with booze) and which ends up taking a toll on the guy... Eventually, the guy gets fuckd up but alone... |

@[Custerflux:45139] Exactly man! as in “letting go of the old grudges and resentments” that little by little accumulate in every relationship and end up poisoning it from within |

@[ArquiKaki:44106] Hi there! (almost 4 years after your original question), I think the phrase: "I'd walk with my people if I could find them" means that the girl from the song turned the guy's world upside down (she changed him completely, changed his perspective, ideas, etc,), so he no longer communes with the way of thinking of his friends. He no longer relates, identifies, nor get along with them as he used to, so now he doesn't have people to hang out with, a group of friends "to walk with" to pretend this girl didn’t affect him and to brag he is totally fine and that he feels sorry for her... I hope it helps... |

@[foggydecember:38551]: You are right! The lady at the end is the customer, not the prostitute. Previous to the lady scene you can see a man walking out of her room with his shirt unbuttoned and keeping some bills in his pocket (a clear reference he is a male prostitute). The facial expression of the lady at the end says it all; the inner emptiness, sadness (perhaps shame or guilt), and loneliness left after time's up and the "love" ends… the price of love I guess… Great video, song and lyrics btw! |

gangofone got it right, it's definitely about domestic violence: "The children sent home from school Will not stop crying" The "children" are actually him and his wife/girlfriend (children emotionally neglected often become victims of emotional abuse or abusers once they become adults) in the song I think he means that, despite becoming adults, they can't get rid off the broken (neglected / abused) children they were once, still crying in the inside... "And it hurts all the time when you don't return my calls And you haven't got the time to remember how it was It's so cold in this house" His girlfriend/wife completely oblivious of him, careless about making the relationship work despite his requests, furthermore, emotionally and mentally abusing him (silent treatment, gas lighting...) they become two strangers living under the same roof... "I can't eat , I can't sleep I can't sleep, I can't dream An aversion to light Got a fear of the ocean" depressive symptoms and side effects of emotional abused victims... including "aversion and fear" to life, often leading victims to depression, cronic anxiety and even suicide... "Like drinking poison, like eating glass... Come and show me how it was" He feels tired, drained of energy and numbed, still, he keeps trying to fix things by trying to make his girl come into senses (not fully aware the extent she has contributed to his detriment) "We've got crosses on our eyes For richer, for poorer, for better, for worse We've been walking into the furniture..." Perhaps nostalgia for plans they once made (marrying each other or remain together despite adversity...) plans now very distant, almost impossible moreover as they both seem lifeless in the relationship... |

| @[skjfhgfieui:1912] - I was thinking it probably meant that by not being yourself you become part of the crowd and just another person without identity, personal opinions and thoughts, therefore, someone impossible of recognize...your comment on how even close people change, even to a point in which is not easy to recognize them is a great interpretation, thanks... | |
| Bruce Springsteen – Dancing In The Dark Lyrics | 11 years ago |
| I agree with your interpretation, except for the part of " this gun's for hire", which I think it refers to looking for a purpose or something that puts you "back in the game" (so to speak), the game of pursuing a real life, a better one. A spark = perhaps a motivation or a sign that shows a new path to follow, a new path which encourage you once again to get up, take risks and not giving a f*ck of whatever people around you are doing or how little one has to lose (being hungry to the point of starvation for waiting for that sign arrives) and to stop thinking and just doing something instead of feeling self-pity, "you can't start a fire sitting round crying over a broken heart"... going through a similar phase here. Great comment. | |
