I can’t say, and this wasn’t my first impression, but after some thought, I think this is about a man who went to a prostitute to try and get over his old love. He’s trying to replace his old girlfriend with this person. She’s beautiful, fun, and engaging, but in the end it’s not the same. So he dances with her anyway and lets nature takes its course.
I actually hope I’m wrong and there’s a deeper meaning. It’s a beautiful song. I just wish the devil wasn’t a part of it, but it’s also why I think this interpretation makes the most sense. |

I think the song is about a break up, and he’s sitting at his desk thinking about her and realizing how much he still loves her, but she’s gone and they both have to restart. |

I just discovered this song recently and think it’s one of weezers best songs. It’s kinda obvious what it’s about, but then again, not completely. The whole song is about the singers ego, which he can’t let go of, even though he get punked by some army dude in a bar. It’s actually quite a feat considering the amount of verbal gymnastics required to come off so aggressive, and yet, non threatening. The guy singing can’t fight or defend himself. The whole song is about holding onto his ego. I think to appreciate it you have to put yourself in River’s shoes. |

To me, this song is about unrequited love. The singer is expressing how the girl has led him on, but he really wants her. She has shown him interest, but never took steps to make it happen. It’s about the pain of loving someone with all your heart from a distance, but they keep that distance and always have an excuse. Sadly, this is the way love goes most of the time, but few realize, and when they do, they feel an excruciating pain in their heart that never really goes away completely. This song captures that pain and records it for us, particularly in the end with the long drawn out ‘Aye’. Sometimes a sound captures a feeling better than words, but the words in this song are perfect. \n\nWhen this song came out I was just a preteen. But now as an adult it hit me so hard knowing the meaning for myself. Excellent album all around. Who else wishes they could relive the 90’s? |

I don’t care what anyone says. This song is about a girl. Good music is left open to interpretation. It wouldn’t be so powerful unless each person could allow the song to settle in their mind as it falls. Besides, who desires death who has love? And what earthly thing does a man desire more than the woman he loves? What wouldn’t he give for her? How long would he wait for her in the house of death? Waiting to die because he can’t have her. Ok, maybe it is about death, but I just don’t see a huge difference between death and love and women. They are intertwined so tightly I don’t tell them apart. |

Ugh. This is frustrating! Heard this song many times, but never tried to figure out the words until today when I decided to play it on my guitar. The words are: “we will be BOTH, standing at that alter”! It took me one listen to figure it put after looking up every lyric page... |

The man who wrote this song went to a prestigious boarding school as a youth. If you watch the music video, the whole scene is set in such a school and appears to be about an affair between a young man and his teacher. This is how I interpret the meaning, although there may be more to it... |

To me this song means:
Most people are consumed by a mentality of group think, like cattle, and those who don't fit in are observed as a fool. Some see through the common brainwashing of modern day. They cannot participate in the mindless following of whatever trash is dished up for the general population. Because of this, they become more reclusive, finding solace in solitude. The herd is conditioned and bred to ostracize such dangers to their slumber. Who wants to wake up to the Truth and see the world for what it is so they can be a fool? |

Beautiful song I grew up listening to in jr. high and high school. This song always felt like it was dripping wet with sadness and still does today. I didn't always know the meaning, but always understood that it was about a relationship with a girl that was dragging him down. As I grew older I could tell it was about an abortion.
I grew up in a christian family and believe that abortion is really just another term for murdering your own child. Well, I don't just believe, I know and it's apparent that Ben really figured this out somewhere along the way. You can't murder a person and walk away without guilt and shame; especially a small innocent child you conceived of your own efforts. In either case it's murder. Making it legal doesn't change that fact and the conscience God gave you will let you know it.
It's sad cause it sounds like they were both so young and our society tells people you should do this, but imagine what a great person this child would have grown to be. I hope that Ben and the girl have found healing from this mistake, even though that will never bring back their child, we can move on once we've admitted our mistakes and gone through the proper remorse. God would not condemn them if they are truly remorseful, but that doesn't change the fact that we reap what we sow. Abortions wreak havoc on the people who get them for years and years to come. It's so sad that a child is killed and parents are devastated all for the sake of convenience when having a child is such a beautiful thing which draws people together.
Anyways, I know a lot of people wouldn't agree with me and you're entitled to your opinions, but I say these things because I like the song and think there is a moral we can pull from it; Don't kill your unborn children. It's not worth it. They are a human being entitled to like just as much as you. Making the wrong decision here is haunting and destructive in many ways. |

This song is about the writer having sex with a women and how he worships her. The pivotal theme is how he compares sex with this women to going to conventional church. He's saying that his church has nothing to offer except poison and that he should have been worshiping the women (sex) previously. Sex has become his religion.
I could probably appreciate the song if it was only about sex and that being his religion, but since he has to attack the church and put it down in the comparison it leaves me not wanting to hear it anymore. God created sex to be a wonderful and beautiful thing. In many ways it's meant to be symbolic of the eventual marriage between Him and His bride, the church. So it would seem natural that a secular person might worship sex, but the attack on the church is unnecessary. I appreciate a lot of secular music, but this song ventures into the territory of utter blasphemy and so I sadly can't listen to it without being bothered, but this is the nature of mankind from the beginning. We stray and are willing to worship anything other than the only One who is deserving, our Creator. Bruno Mars wrote a song called "Locked out of Paradise" in which he makes a very similar comparison without blatantly attacking organized worship of God. I think it's a good song and enjoy listening to it. That's the difference, but when people reject God their creator, He doesn't try to force them back to Him. He is a loving God who only want's people who will choose Him over the world and self service. When a person rejects Him and delves into self worship or worship of anything other than God, thought they may not realize it, are playing right into Satan's hands. Satan desires to be worshiped too and will lead people into this if possible. The writer in this song is laying out the story of his taking one step further away from worship God (if he ever did) toward worshiping another, which ultimately leads to the death of a soul unless they come to the saving grace of Jesus Christ. And that is all God really desires for you or anyone else, it that we be with Him in heaven forever. The true church should only be about that as well. There is occasion where organized religion has gone off track, but generally speaking, bible based religion has only done good. There are those who may claim to be christian and act wickedly, but that typically means that they were lying when they professed faith. There are a lot of true christians out there who only want to do good and actually do. This is the main movement of christianity. The violence depicted in the video for this movie is mostly propaganda and isn't in any way condoned by the Bible. The Bible is clear that christians shouldn't even judge unbelievers. All we can do is offer to others what the Bible says, that homosexuality is a sin and is harmful to the individual. If you don't like that, that's ok. It's not my position to judge you over your decisions. We can have a difference of opinions and even be friends. I may be closer to those whom I agree with more, but I don't hate anybody and actually have much more distaste for people who claim to be christians, but don't act like it. Even then I choose not to quarrel, but that's pretty much the extent of my distaste for others. Life's too short to get worked up over things we can't change. We all have a lot of love to offer one another and shouldn't let things get in the way of that. If we can't agree to the point where it's frustrating, then we can go our separate ways. No biggie. Anyways if you're reading this I hope you enjoyed it. Peace. |

I guess you just get to decide for everybody else that they are gay whether they like it or not simply because it's not 1950? And not sure who you're quoting with the "go away" part. I personally know people who are strait who we previously full blown gay. Do you get to decide that for them? |

The correct lyrics are "You can trust me not to DRINK". There's no "and" starting this sentence. The song was later changed to say "think" for political correctness, but make absolutely no sense, so I'd stick with the original intent and meaning.
Does anyone know the name of the girl this song was written for? I'm dying to find out if it's Chelsea or Josie. That would make more sense than Jealousy, which I know is the correct lyric, but I imagine could have been changed to make the song more universal... |

I heard this song on the radio and naturally wanted to hear it again. It's extremely talented and the execution was genius. I was sad to see that the author has used his God given talent to attack the church. I go to church. I have been to quite a few and can speak for many when I say that Christians do not hate gays. As a matter of fact I have had friends in the church who were gay or formerly gay and had no issues with them unless they tried to force their homosexuality on me which one did. At that point I just stopped being his friend. I didn't attack him or beat him. As a Christian I'm called to love everyone, but in doing so, I'm also called to call all sinners to repentance, homosexuals included, especially if they would like to be a part of the church. The Bible is clear that Christians are not to judge outside the church. So I don't go around judging people or attacking anyone. I live a quiet life serving my Lord in love and respect for all people. The Bible also says that what you do unto the least of all people you have done unto Christ and that of course includes homosexuals. So in no case is gay bashing or bad mouthing anyone acceptable.
However, there is a continued attack upon the church from pro gay liberal movements which would like to change the church into a broad minded indiscriminate watered down democracy with no conviction. That's not how it works. We have our beliefs you have yours. That's ok. We can live in peace of we respect each other. We won't try to change the definition of "gay" and you can stop trying to change the definition of "marriage", a biblical concept derived solely from the bible. However, trying to constantly force gay agenda into the spotlight and view of people without respect for them is wrong. I'm not saying that is what this song is doing, but that is what the homosexual crowd is doing in general. Which brings up most of the strife regarding our differences and then songs like this are written as if we should feel sorry for gays as if the church is so bad. I don't feel sorry for gays and I don't feel sorry for myself. I think we can live in peace if we just respect each other. I'll keep my sex private and you should do the same. You don't need to have a parade and spread your sexuality all over the place. That is disrespectful, gay or straight.
God's desire is for all to come to know Him and His salvation. If you don't want it, fine, but I would offer that in hopes that if someone does they might know it. The Bible is clear the homosexuality is a sin that hurts the sinner as every sin does. You don't have to accept that, but that is what the Bible says. You can respectfully decline and I would respect you opinion and not try to force it on you. it's pretty simple. Things get complicated when people try to force things which isn't necessary. I could hold just as much respect for a gay person as a straight person if they are willing to show me the same. That is what the Bible calls for. That is what the true christian church is about. Let's not attack one another. That's not necessary.
As for this song, I still think it's a wonderful tune and would like to hear it more, but since I can't agree with the meaning I'll have to forgo buying it or saving it to a playlist or something. Not a big deal. There's lots of talent out there. It's just too bad. |

| Jack Johnson – They Do They Don't Lyrics

I agree with another commenter that this is definitely about Government rather than religion, if it's not then it should be. There are obviously many references that would lead us to think of religion, but there's no follow though that coincides with religion. The conclusions to his statements all point to tyranny which is not identifiable with western religions, but government fits the bill precisely.
Also, you could not give a Trojan horse to religion. In my opinion Jack is hypothesizing revolt against our corrupt governments with this statement.
If religion has any place in this song, it would only fit as a religion vs. government theme which make a lot of sense given all the biblical referencing.
From Jacks work it's obvious that he believes in God and is somewhat of a "new ager". He's not very discriminate except when it come to tyranny. He is clearly against abuse in any form, so once again it would not make sense for him to write an anti-religious song as that would be hypocritical, but he has definitely made anti-government themes and anti corruption statements in other songs like "Sleep through the static".
Further more Jack states "I believe" in "It's all understood", but does leave you with the impression that he's not hard set on any singular form of religion. So once again it would be contradictory to believe in God, but then to call him unfair at the same time for creating the Tree of Knowledge. His statement about "the Serpents ruse" furthermore supports the idea of satan vs. God or more fittingly for this song God vs. government, the government being the ones who have succumbed to the "Serpent ruse".
Finally, looking at Jacks Character in general, one can see that he's a pretty laid back guy and who probably doesn't get worked up easily. What does seem to get him going it injustice. That coupled with his obvious adherence to religions in general make a pretty solid case for this being an anti-government theme. |

I'm pretty sure this song is about a girl who cheated on him and as the song progresses his attraction towards her "carousing" (not kerosene) eyes turns to suspicion to hatred. At first she's a riddle in the beautiful sky. Then she's a target that he cannot hit. It's also interesting to me that he seems to be the one cheating in his song "The Gardener". I think he continually poses the question: "where do my bluebird fly" as he's wondering where she goes and who she's cheating with. Anyway, that's my take. Beautiful song either way. |

I haven't found any significant theories to this meaning nor have I found commentary from CAKE so taking it quite literally this song must be the epitome of disdain for Corporate America. We've caught this vibe from CAKE before with: You turn the screws. Using cool blue reason to pull apart this song it's easy to imagine an executive who has become too greedy and become involved with the mob or the government in some way and is now paying the consequences of losing his wife and children as collateral damage. The "cool blue reason" is the shifting paradigm of this man as he realizes he's losing everything right before his eyes due to his unquenchable greed. He's gotten in too deep. I believe "eight" more hours to go is simply a reference to your typical work day and waking up everyday to another eight hours of work. It's possible that the writer is inferring this repetition is what led this man down this road. At this point I cannot see any other meaning to this song making sense. |
