Regina Spektor – Somedays Lyrics 10 years ago
This isn't some sappy song about longing for romance. Regina doesn't write like that. It's definitely something deeper.

I agree with the mental illness theory, but I don't think it's necessarily about split-personality disorder. I think it might be about dementia or alzheimer's (both of which could cause someone to say things like "I'm in love with your daughter, I wanna have her baby"). The people who come in quiet, sweep up and leave are maybe the workers in a nursing home or some kind of facility like that. And the person's friends aren't strong because it can be very hard to deal with an illness like that. "I've gone away, don't call me, don't write," is either a brief moment of the person realizing what's wrong with them, or what they would say to their loved ones if they could.

Whatever it's about, it's a beautiful song, and a great end to a great album. I wish more people knew about how great Regina is.

Vampire Weekend – Hudson Lyrics 10 years ago
"Hudson" isn't some character. It's Henry Hudson, who Hudson Bay is named after (he did die there). New York's Hudson River is also named after him. Henry Hudson was not a war vet, he was a Dutch explorer in the 1600s...

This is my favorite Jaymay song. I love how she can take simple thoughts and turn them into beautiful music.

Regina Spektor – Summer in the City Lyrics 11 years ago
It definitely sounds like a lesbian love affair. "Cleavage cleavage, cleavage" "I've been hallucinating you, babe, At the backs of other women"

Regina Spektor – Après Moi Lyrics 11 years ago
I don't know what the Russian part means, but to me the English lyrics sound like a person who wants to kill them self, but knows they can't/shouldn't/won't.

"I must go on standing" - I must keep on living.
"You can't break that which isn't yours" "I'm not my own, it's not my choice"- sounds religious, like the person doesn't think the control of their life belongs to them, but rather some higher being. Or maybe they're saying that it wouldn't be fair to cheat and get out of life sooner than they're supposed to.

The chorus is paranoia about death. No one would want to think that when they die people would literally "inherit" their body against their will.

Regina Spektor – Eet Lyrics 11 years ago
This might make no sense, but maybe it's about forgetting things (like when you get older). Like people have said, the "eet" key on a type writer is like a delete key on a keyboard, except you can't actually delete the ink. When you forget things, they aren't being deleted. They still exist, but you can't reach them. It's more like pressing "eet" than "delete".

Regina Spektor – The Calculation Lyrics 11 years ago
I think it has to do with society being run over by machines/technology (kind of like "Machine", which is on the same album).

"So we made our own computer
Out of macaroni pieces
And it did our thinking
While we lived our lives"
These two people who are supposed to be in love aren't "thinking" (or communicating with each other) because the computer they made is doing it for them. So their love isn't real.

"Pulled 'em out they weren't beating
And we weren't even bleeding"
They're hearts aren't beating. They're not human. It's like they're turning into machines themselves.

"We beat 'em up against each other
We beat 'em up against each other
We struck 'em hard against each other
We struck 'em so hard, so hard til they sparked"
They need to manually beat their hearts against each other to get a "spark." They can't naturally feel human emotions anymore because the machines are doing all the artificial thinking and feeling for them.

I love how everyone has their own interpretation of Regina's songs. She's an amazing writer.
