when I listen to this I think how during adolescence you often conform to what other people do and everyone want's so hard to be original and individualistic they end up all being to afraid to be true to themselves. "Don't you think that it's boring how people talk Making smart with their words again, well I'm bored Because I'm doing this for the thrill of it, killin' it Never not chasing a million things I want And I am only as young as the minute is full of it Getting pumped up from the little bright things I bought But I know they'll never own me (Yeah) The first part indicates that she hears a lot of people "talking boring" because they're trying to sound really sophisticated in the way that elitists do for "making smart with their words" but Lorde has no time for bullshit, so she's bored. The next line pretty much is her telling everyone that anything she does she does it for herself and she's a go-getter who "chases" the things that she wants. She's aware of her age and is fully embracing is without being blinded to consumerist mass media culture ("they'll never own me.") "Baby be the class clown I'll be the beauty queen in tears It's a new art form showing people how little we care (Yeah) We're so happy, even when we're smilin' out of fear Let's go down to the tennis court, and talk it up like yeah (Yeah)" The chorus is her encouraging the listener to be whoever they want, and she'll be the self-proclaimed queen that she has always been, meanwhile noticing that nonchalance has become the new "cool thing to do" and critiques the fact that happiness is often false. The "tennis court" could be interpreted as the "back and forth" that happens in superficial conversations where no one really talks about what they feel. I think though she participates, she is conscious of how she's not like that. "Pretty soon I'll be getting on my first plane I'll see the veins of my city like they do in space But my head's filling fast with the wicked games, up in flames How can I fuck with the fun again, when I'm known And my boys trip me up with their heads again, loving them Everything's cool when we're all in line, for the throne But I know it's not forever (Yeah)" Obviously this part is about her very real experience of getting on a plane for the first time when she rose to fame and traveled abroad to perform for the first time. She is concerned with the "fame game" that celebrities play and hopes that she can still have a normal life after she becomes "known." However, her "boys" and friends still treat her just the same, "tripping her up" being all playful like always. I suppose the "throne" reference is about being the next big "hot shot" of upcoming artists and musicians, which is a very wonderful experience but she knows "it's not forever" so she shouldn't lose herself to it. "It looked alright in the pictures (Yeah) Getting caught soft with the triple is it I fall apart, with all my heart And you can watch from your window And you can watch from your window" This part is about seeing fame from a distance. She thinks it's "alright" and isn't too focused on the glamour, but the "soft" part could refer to the danger of fame and haters which is emotionally exhausting and painful at times, and "you can watch from your window" of distance just like she did when she wasn't famous. It could also refer to plane imagery from the like "pretty soon i'll be getting on my first plane, i'll see the veins of my city like they do in space," we're seeing her fame from this massive distance, because the realities you're perceiving are literally like the view you get in a plane = you really know nothing about what it's like to be famous until you are famous. The ending, I suppose, is that this tennis court talk continues even when she's gone, and that people "talk it up" about fame being wonderful and awesome, which is a conversation she never really related to. And the "yeah" is probably the mutual agreement that everyone has about wanting to be famous. |
