Definitely one of the most underappreciated artists of the 90's. One of my favorites, though most of my friends have no idea who he is.

Duncan Sheik – She Runs Away Lyrics 12 years ago
First off, what a beautiful song, Duncan Sheik should have been the James Taylor of the 90’s, but I guess it wasn’t in the cards.

I believe that this song is about the love between two people find each other after exiting long and painful relationships. The difference is that she has been through this before and is better equipped to handle the situation than is her male counterpart.

“You may not see the end of it.” He is in a bad place, he just got out of a relationship where he got his heart broken and he is very depressed and feels that he is worthless. He feels like he will never find someone to love him again.

“But luckily she comes around. It isn't what she talks about, it's just the way she is.” Unexpectedly, he meets someone who he has strong feelings for. He goes from feeling like he will never find love again to feeling like he has met the girl that he was destined to be with. It is not necessarily the things she says to him at first that leads to his attraction, it is her overall persona and how she acts and carries herself in a genuine manner that intrigues him. Maybe the one who broke his heart said all the right things, but was not a nice person when it came down to how she treated him.

“(and she says) Oh darlin' don't you know, the darkness comes and the darkness goes.” She feels strongly for him as well, but understands that he has not had time to sort through the feelings and the pain of his previous relationship. She is telling him that though he may feel as if he is healed when he is around her and that he forgets all of his worries, he is still hurting inside and must work through these feelings before they can truly move forward. She is wise and has been in a situation similar to this in the past. There will be good times and bad, but he must work through this before he can move on.

“Oh babe why don't you let it go? Happiness ain't never how you think it should be so.” She is telling him to slow down. He wants to move quickly with the relationship and thinks doing so will make him forget his pain and replace the emptiness he feels inside. She realizes this and tells him to let it go, relax. Enjoy the moment. Happiness is not created by being in the ideal situation that he has created in his mind. Happiness will come when he has worked through his situation and is truly content with where he is and this will take time.

“I mystified the simple life.” He regresses, as will happen with depression. He wonders how all the people he sees in the world seem so happy. He longs for a simple and happy life without all of the complexities and conflicting feelings he has inside. He has idealized this wonderful illusion of happiness to the point where it feels unattainable.

“I covered up with consciousness.” He wants to fit in to his aforementioned simple life. He does not want others to see and recognize his pain and conflict, so he pretends that he is fine around others. He makes a conscious effort to hide his feelings of pain and inadequacy.

"I saw myself and broke it down, 'till nothing more was left." He has completely over-analyzed both his current and previous situation. He self-defeatingly over-analyzes his previous situation wondering what might have been and what he did wrong, when the reality of the situation is that he cannot change it now anyway and it may not have been his fault. Regardless, he blames himself and dwells on things he cannot change. However, I believe that he also over-analyzes his current situation. He has someone who cares about him, but she gives him the space he needs to heal and grieve. Because he does not understand he needs time to work through his past before he can move forward, coupled with his feelings of inadequacy due to his previous relationship, he over-analyzes the situation and mistakes her giving him space for a lack of feelings for him.

“She saw the symptoms right away, and spoke to me in poetry.” She has been here before, knows the signs and understands. She tells him how she feels; she tells him that she believes he is a good person and deserving of love, and eventually that she cares for him.

"Sometimes the more you wonder why, the worse it seems to get.” She is telling him not to dwell in the past or over-analyze the present. By doing so, he is just making things seem worse than they really are. He has a good thing right in front of his face. Enjoy it for what it is. Take it slow and see where everything goes.

“But she runs away. She runs away.” She has given him space to take in what she has said and to work through his problems. However, he has not really fully understood what she has told him and interprets her giving him space as abandonment. He begins spiraling into a deep depression.

“And then you know there comes a time, you need her more than anything. You may believe yours are the wounds that only she can heal.” She has been gone longer than he thought and he has gone off the deep end. He has hit rock bottom. He is so depressed that he contemplates whether he should go on with his life. He has placed her on a pedestal and idealized her to the point that he believes that her love is the only thing that can save him. Without this he will wither away and die.

“Then everything will turn around and she becomes so serious. What she chose to offer you, was all that you could have.” He is about at the end of his rope, when she suddenly comes back. The time apart was not just for him to sort through his issues, but for her to sort through her own. Unlike him, who wallowed in his own self-misery, she was able to sort through her feelings and realized not only how much he loved her, but that she loved him too. She returns and sits him down and explains it all to him. She offers him all he ever wanted, her love.

That is what I believe this song is about. If it is not, I prefer to be wrong.
