In its initial demo as "Psychology of Desire" (which contains the same "magnetic trumpets/hidden motivations" lyrics), this song was a commentary on the primal sexual urges of the human species. However, in this re-written form, the song also doubles as a commentary about the guy who's job it was/is to be the one to push the "big red button" and launch the nuclear holocaust (I don't remember where, but I read this on the Internet in a Q&A session with Devo member Jerry Casale). Either way, it's still a good song! |

Love the song, and I just about fell out of my chair when I realized the lyric: "Two waves and I/both travel by And that makes all the difference/to me" comes from Robert Frost's poem "The Road Not Taken": "Two roads diverged in a wood, and I, I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference." The lyrics are actually taken from a poem by William Wordsworth called "My Heart Leaps Up When I Behold". Both the poem and various other songs connected to SMiLE, such as "Wonderful" and "Surf's Up", deal with the subjects of youth and spiritualism. I personally like the song - especially its head-spinning harmonies - but only in the context of the album. |
